Best guitar driven grooves

Hendrix - Voodoo Child (slight return)

I see you that and give you: I see we’re busy tonight. this is a Smiths ref:

Hey - I do some of my best posting half in the bag in a hotel room!

Lord, that sounds great (and is huge fun to play) - and look at both Pagey with his #1 Les Paul and I think that’s Rich Robinson behind him, rocking a Zemaitis (who was a London based luthier who’s stuff was used by TONS of folks like Ron Wood and James Honeyman Scott from the Pretenders - I’ve never played one)…

Again, I am struck by the word groove, as opposed to, say, riff or hook. We haven’t even touched on stuff by James Brown’s guitar player, nicknamed “chank” for the funky sound he got - or the riff from Bowie’s song Golden Years - talk about a guitar-driven groove…or the dozens of great funk players out there…

So many.

I’ve always been partial to the main riff in Hearts “Barracuda”.

I’ll toss another vote to the already mentioned ACDC. Angus may have brought the flash, but I always thought it was Malcolm who was their secret weapon.

Honky Tonk Women

I’m gonna get flamed for this.

Love her all I can by KISS

Any true AC/DC fan knows it’s the rhythm section that makes their magic. I’ve seen them live a crapload of times and I’ve never heard them leave that pocket. Groove perfection…

One groove that I can think of off the top of my head is “Always On the Run” off of Lenny Kravits’ Mama Said album. It was a riff written by Slash of GNR fame and it frickin’ kicks me in the ass everytime I hear it, specially when the second guitar and the rest of the band come in after the intro. I love playing along to that song…

I feel compelled to add Napalm Death’s Twist the Knife (Slowly) to your list.

I think I’m gonna have to make a new playlist for my iPod now after reading all these.

Well, if we’re talking riffs instead of grooves, I’ll go with “Divide and Conquer” by Husker Du.

Don’t know if this qualifies as a groove, either, but the guitar part on “Can’t Hardly Wait” by The Replacements drives the whole song (and sounds simple to play, as well).

Well, I’m kinda partial to Cut to the Chase by Steve Morse, with Jeff Watson of Night Ranger*.

Link.

Starting about 20 seconds in.

Man, now I have to go play guitar…

Slee

*Yeah, there is a lot of guitar wanking, but is has a great groovy riff.

I really love the rhythm guitar on Alice Cooper’s “Caught in a Dream”.

Ooh, how about David Bowie’s Rebel Rebel.

Iconic. Not sure if you can dance to it, but I’d also submit Mr. Marr’s riff on “The Headmaster Ritual” as a nominee…

Put me down for the riff from Bloodsucking Leeches - Dixie Dregs with Steve Morse.

Makes me feel…different.

For a groove, as opposed to a riff, I’ll throw in ‘B Movie Box Car Blues’ by Delbert McLinton - especially as played by the Blues Brothers Band - Matt Murphy and Steve Cropper.
