Bought an Ego self propelled. It is great. My lot is flat and approx 60x165.
Very light and quiet. Plenty of charge to do front and back. I used the self propel and even mowed both front and back twice to check the charge - had plenty of juice left. My SIL has had the same mower for 2 years w/ no complaints. Liked it so much, I bought the string trimmer which uses the same battery.
Definitely an improvement over gas (tho we’ll see when I go after the leaves this fall!)
My EGO does a fine job crunching/mulching leaves, to a point. With 3 large trees in full shed mode, I still have to rake and bag. In the pre-peak shed mode, the mulching by the saves work later in the leaf season. I’ve NEVER run into a situation where even the thickest grass stalled the mower.
Good timing for a bump. I just got done mowing the lawn. I probably should have gone with battery powered, but the corded is working out pretty well so far. It has been taking me a little longer than I like. Full mowing time is 40-50 minutes most mows so far.
I think battery vs. cord would save me about 10 minutes per mow and some aggravation. I’ll see how this year goes and maybe break down and buy an EGO or the like next year.
The corded one can be cleaned up, handle removed and stored as an backup mower.
I had a learning curve when I switched to corded, and it was a little slower at first. But once I learned the pattern for my lawn, it’s pretty much the same speed. Always work away from the outlet so you aren’t crossing your cord, and on your last pass next to an obstacle, do the backside of it all at once, then return to continue your regular rows.
But I have a small yard and well-placed outlets, so I can do it with a 50-foot cord and switching outlets only when moving from front to back yard. For something bigger, cordless would be easier.
From your OP I got the impression cost was a concern. My Ego wasn’t cheap - $500. But I can afford it and appreciate the ease/convenience. Hopefully it will last long enough to reduce the cost per use.
Yeah - I didn’t think I needed the self propelled. But the model in the store had it, so we bought it. It is so light and easy to maneuver compared to the gas. And the first time I engaged it, it kinda surprised me and seemed too fast (tho adjustable). But after a pass or 2, I came to appreciate - almost enjoy - it.
Might make me more willing to more more frequently - whether or not that is a good thing.
I bought a sharpening kit and sharpen the blades annually. I spray the blades with heavy-duty silicon spray about every third mowing, and it does a really great job.
I just love how quiet it is, and that’s compared to my corded Greenworks electric mower.
So I used my new Cordless Mower today. I upgraded for this year. The new mower is a Greenworks 40V 21" Cordless Brushless Push Mower. Cost was $365 with tax. 1 battery and charger included.
It mulched great, including some leftover leaves. Mower worked great, the lawn was not a full cutting yet so I can’t really judge time. I would guess equal to a 1/2 to 2/3 cutting. Took under 20 minutes including handling the battery on both ends. It used about 1/2 the charge I believe. It is amazingly quiet also. No cord was a lot easier. A full cutting took 50-60 minutes with the corded mower.
Bonus with this mower, the handle easily folds fully down and the mower lifts up to be pushes like a hand cart and stores in this format taking up a lot less room in my garage. a very nice bonus.
100% confirmed, no need at all for self-propelled.
2 weeks later, did the full lawn today in 30 minutes. I’m very happy with the results of this mower. 1 battery does the whole lawn with 1 bar to spare.
Was really sweet starting out this season. No need to buy gas, check oil/sparkplug/filer, no question of how many pulls it will take… Just plug in the battery beforehand, pull the battery off the charger, slip it into the mower, and push a button. Started right up. SWEET!
Over the past winter I’ve seen more rechargeable snowblowers - VERY quiet and the owners are all very pleased. Batterey technology has definitely reached a level where they are VERY effective.
