Best metal songs?

If the OP gets in the mood for shit a little less mainstream…

In the early 80’s, Florida was a major hotbed for metal (as well as surprisingly la belle province du Quebec), and Death, founded by metal guitar nabob Chuck Schuldiner*, was one of the forerunners of the scene.
“Flesh and the Power it Holds”, off their seventh and final release The Sound of Perseverance, is sort of like a suite - eight and a half minutes of all these different heavy parts and styles. At the time this came out, in 1998, it turned a lot of heads, upping the technicality with complex song structures.
To the uninitiated, Chuck’s vocals here might sound like Connie Stevens after drinking drano.

*“…the band’s driving force, Chuck Schuldiner, is acknowledged as the originator of extreme metal.” - wiki.
I’ve posted these rascals before, and why not again…Cephalic Carnage, from Colorado, are merchants of grind metal that is nothing short of synapse-shorting, especially live - unbelievable to watch. Ganja grind!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G14u64D-Sc The vocals here should hopefully get you in a very angry mood: Neurosis - ["The Doorway"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUBegD4_Bn4) from *Times of Grace* (ha! there's a part in here that reminds me *so* much of a part in King Crimson's "One More Red Nightmare".)

Maryland’s Dying Fetus - “Your Treachery Will Die With You”. Through John Gallagher’s trademark ‘gurgle-growl’ vox here one can discern a dislike of a certain someone in power.

And in case you’re not all frazzled out, I’ll leave you with some Internecine.

Here’s a whole album by High on Fire.

ISIS, “In Fiction”.

I know this isn’t, necessarily, a listen-and-comment thread, but I’ve got to say… I loved that !

It pegged a few meters on my musical dashboard. I’m not shittin’ you; this link was fulfilling on many levels. I’m not usually one to enjoy the video, but well… c’mon. This is something else. The comments on that page are a great way to reflect on what you’ve just experienced. Thank you, Bo.

High on Fire was one of my best concert experiences ever! The audience was in a swimming pool, the band on the edge.

Who hell, who are these guys?! I’ve just left Youtube on autoplay and I’m on my sixth or seventh King Gizard song. This is pretty incredible stuff!

KG&tLW are from Australia. They play psychedelic rock and are quite good at it. They’ve been a band since 2010. In 2011 they released an EP; 2012 saw the release of their first proper full-length album. Since then, they’ve released 12 full albums, including 5 this year alone. The 5th, Polygondwanaland, was just released 12 days ago and is available for free at that link (but if you want a hardcopy, you have to make it yourself (from their templates, natch)).

And yeah, the guys seem incapable of producing a song that is below “acceptable” levels, often reach “engaging” and “memorable” and occasionally achieve Instant Classic Earworm status (like with Rattlesnake).

Here’s their bandcamp page, too.

Korn’s cover of “Another Brick in the Wall”, all three parts in one track.

Cool. Interesting stuff, and stylistically broad. I’m just randomly clicking through each of those albums on Bandcamp. and it almost feels like a different band made each one. The one you linked to sounds like psychedelic microtonal krautrock, if there were such a genre. Not really what I think of as “metal,” (though if they laid some heavy distortion on the guitars, they’d be most of the way there) but some of their other stuff definitely crosses into more popular definitions of the genre. It’s gonna be fun chewing my way through this stuff. Thanks!
