$333- One way ticket to Europe after four years in the Navy.
It was a 65$ vet bill for my cat Stretch when I could ill-afford it, but he turned out to have such a high fever that the vet said he’d have died in his sleep and I would never have known why. That was over 11 years ago and Stretch is curled up next to me as I type this, purring in his sleep!
(This is how I learned that cute new kittens can carry something they are immune to from their mother’s milk and spread it w/o catching it.)
$125 + airport taxes for a roundtrip flight Detroit to Frankfurt. Great trip. 1997.
$100 + airport taxes for a roundtrip flight Detroit to Las Vegas. 1994
$0 to Hamburg, round trip x4 (only paying taxes) free tickets. Great, great trip.2004.
$450 +tax round trip to London . Awesome trip.1999.
Variety of ski trips out west during the Persian Gulf War 1. Around $100-200 per trip. YAY for travel dealies and being a travel agent!
Actually, every trip we’ve ever taken has been Money.Well.Spent. But the ones that were dirt cheap were especially nice.
Back in 1975 I spent $400.00 on a one way air ticket from Los Angeles to Bangkok, Thailand via Honolulu, Tokyo and Hong Kong taking the long way to Australia.
I didn’t make it back to Los Angeles for over seven years and never did make it to Australia. Only made it as far as Bali.
What a trip!
I just don’t have any really great stories, like so many people here do. I have never paid for the trips I take (and I have taken some doozies, but always on company expenses) and though I donate to various charities, I don’t get personal dividends for it. I guess I have to say the $80 I spent on a pair of Mephisto shoes which I have worn almost every day for three years now. I have never had a pair of shoes last so long or be so comfortable, before.
$600 back when the dollar was strong, paid for round trip to Europe and three and a half months of travelling around.
$185,000 for a house back in 1999 that was just appraised at $375,000 last month. Plus I love the house, love the neighborhood and the payments are lower than the rent on my last apartment!
And several hundred dollars a year (before phone rates came down) calling my parents every day. Granted, often the subject was mom’s trip to the hairdresser or dad telling me what he bought at Cosco…but after they both died, my aunt told me how much they appreciated I called every day just to say hello. Best money I ever spent and strongly recommend you do the same - some day they won’t be there to call anymore.
A plane ticket to England last February. It was about £700 Canadian.
Before that about $1200 on a pc in 2001. It opened up an entire world for this small town girl. (:
Addi Turbo Circular Needles for knitting. Worth the price. And that says something for a tightwad like me. Smooth as silk and doesn’t catch. ( knitters will know what I’m blabbering on about.)
[SIZE=1]Addis scare me.
$20 for a grinder and $30 for a French Press - I’m in coffee heaven!
Around $4000 for 3 weeks in Australia in 1999.
About $400 for 5 days in Maui in 2004.
About $2500 for 3 weeks in the UK in 2005.
A few hundred dollars at various times driving around the US and Canada.
I love traveling.
$15 for “beginning knitting” class in November. I made my grandfather some mittens, my mother a scarf, the kid some knitted kittens (knittens!) and my first sweater is very, very toasty. Knitting was something I really wanted to do but just couldn’t figure out on my own-- but wow! how fun!
I agree. I left NZ in 1984 with NZ$400 and returned in 1988. The very best $400 EVER (of course I earned some shekels, drachma, pounds etc on the way).
Approx. $10K in fertility treatments.
My son is the love of my life - can’t do better than that!
80 cents for a 20 sided die.
Let me guess, it is your killer dice that you grab when you really need to hit.
calm kiwi, sounds like you got a much better deal than I did. But it was all still worth it.

I gleefully pay $12/month extra for my DVR. Just don’t tell Time Warner that they have me by the balls.
$1500 for my new laptop computer. I can now compute from the comfort of my living room chair, the kitchen table, or the toilet, if I’m so inspired. Free at last, free at last, Lord almighty, I’m free at last!
~$15 for my 1986 Halloween costume (Scarlett O’Hara). I managed to snag Rambo and we’ve been together ever since.
$85/year for my gold Delta SkyMiles AMEX. So far I’ve snagged six round trip tickets to Hawaii in 3 years… which would have cost me around $6000. I hope they stay in business!
$.99 for a backscratcher. (The worst part of being single is needing one of those).
$6.00 for my old grey wool pea coat. Its lasted 6 years, its past its prime. I can’t bear to throw it out yet though.
$12.00 for my new 3/4 length leather coat. (Made from happy cows that died of old age. They had to be, it was made in India. Whaaaa?)

**The 19 euro’s ** for the on-line dating service where I met my fiancé. Best buy ever. I already got an engagement ring out of it.
And there are in my wardrobe, among a forest of ill-buys, a precious few clothes and shoes that are. just. perfect. Worth every penny, fifty times over.
For instance the mere **40 euro’s ** I paid for my red plastic jacket. It goes with everything. It makes me look cheerful, stylish and 20 pounds lighter.
It keeps me dry, warm and cool as needed, and if needed, all three at the same time.
Thank Og I had the sense, at the time, to buy two. I’ve worn the first one threadbare, and I’m now one year into the second one.
And I can think of a few meals in restaurants that I remember very, very fondly. Cooking so goooood it ought to be illegal.
**15 euro’s ** for my library card.
The 50 I paid for the adoption fee for Bobbie the Lab mix. For 12 years of unconditional love, incredible investment. The other one I got for free, so he’s earned his keep with smooches (when he’s in the mood) and generally giving me something to get up for every day.
The 2,000 plus I spent on a 3 week British Studies at Oxford journey in 1985. Worked three part time jobs to get the money together, but it was so worth it. Changed my life.
