Best/most enduring movie soundtrack?

I have always been partial to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I will also have to nominate Footloose and Flashdance for longevity.

Yes, I have O Brother, Where Art Thou?, as well. Good stuff - won an Oscar that year, too.

And I’m kicking myself for not mentioning The Buena Vista Social Club soundtrack album. Great tunes from the aging but still unbelievably talented musicians of Cuba.

Not sure about the entire soundtracks, but the themes from The Great Escape and Lawrence of Arabia get a fair amount of use.

Phantom of the Paradise

Did I miss it or did nobody throw out the soundtrack for the Jimmy Cliff vehicle The Harder they Come? Great, great intro to reggae and ska.

Goodfellas. Not only is the music good in and of itself, but seldom has a soundtrack complemented the storyline so well.

Check out the “complete listing” of the Goodfellas soundtrack here.

By the way, in a thread on enduring soundtracks, how can I be the first to mention Amadeus at post 47??!!

Phenomenon.

Dunno what crawled up that reviewer’s ass and died – I think it’s a pretty good album. Any album with Eric Clapton (his “Change the World” is one of my favorite Clapton songs) , Marvin Gaye, Bryan Ferry, and Aaron Neville can’t be all bad.

IIRC, the project began with the album, and the movie was made later to build on the response to the album.

The American Beauty Soundtrack has gotta be up there.

The Moderns (early 90s(?) flick with Linda Fiorentino)
Agree with **The Passion ** as a great soundtrack
Valley Girl: Great new wave/lite punk

I’m probably going to get slammed for this, but…Titanic. After seeing the movie, I just couldn’t wait to get that thing in my CD player.

Yarg. You folks know how to make a not really old guy feel old. No votes for West Side Story or Victory at Sea?

The Blues Brothers and This is Spinal Tap

And now I gotta add James Horner’s masterful Glory. I hear it all the time in ads for other movies, it’s that good. Stirring, majestic, evocative.

I’ve got both and love them.

For oldies, don’t forget Forrest Gump.
For my part, I really can’t believe that Purple Rain is going to be the most enduring soundtrack ever – it’s more ephemeral than many other soundtracks, locked into one period of time that’s going to narrow its appeal in the future.

That said, I don’t know what soundtrack will endure. You’d think classical music, having stood the test of time, would have an edge over a lot of competition. but things like Fantasia, though still in print, never were really big sellers. Ditto for Stanley Kubrick sound tracks.
My guess? For long-lasting with lots of familiar hits, it’s hard to beat the soundtrack from The Wizard of Oz.

Hmm there are a few soundtracks that have gone into deep rotation for me.

Grease - It was a big hit for me when it came out.
The Sound of Music - I grew up in a square household here in Amishland…
Married to the Mob - I bounced around to Debbie Harry quite a bit when I was young and smokin’
Gypsy - The Bette Midler TV version…

as for lasting rotation, I can only think of one soudntrack that I can listen to anytime.

That would be Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I can live vicariously as Hedwig and belt out the tunes.

Last of the Mohicans

Yanno, I don’t even think of that as a soundtrack, it’s such a good album.

Actually, the original album “The Wall” came out about five years or so before the movie, so I don’t know that it really counts as a “soundtrack”.

But I didn’t really come here to nitpick – I came here to add another vote for “Repo Man”!
