best MUSIC books you've read?

Stanley Booth, The True Adventures of the Rolling Stones. If you like Gonzo journalism. Don’t let it be your only book on the Stones, though. A few chapters are real gems. After thia, I just concentrate on the music, I don’t much care about the various messed up lives of musicians.

Many Years from Now, by Barry Miles, published in 1997 is, basically, a couple of hundred pages interview with Paul McCartney. Macca is usually a good interviewee. Much old stuff, but interesting additions too. There are some slower moments in the book, but I’d say it makes for a nice read, on the whole.

Also have to agree with pldennison on The Beatles Recording Sessions by Mark Lewisohn.
