Best of the Rest of the Top 40: 1968

I am the God of Hellfire…Arthur Brown over Steppenwolf, but only just.

1910 Fruitgum Company had several hits, but I don’t remember ever hearing ANY of their songs on oldies stations. Is there a reason for this, other than their general suckiness? Lord knows there’s plenty of crap that does get airplay on oldies radio.

Both were released in December 1967, so seemingly a coincidence, but a pretty weird one.

There’s a few things you have to keep in mind about most oldies stations. First, their considerably culled down playlists do not really reflect what was actually popular at the time the songs were new. Second, due to the pernicious influence of programmers, there are many artists and entire genres that are ignored by most oldies stations. As I pointed out in a thread from last year, the 1910 Fruitgum Company and other “Bubblegum Rock” artists from the late 60s are examples of this.

Ah, thanks. That was a good year for such things – earlier in 1967, Deep Purple (main riff of “Hush”) and the Beatles (second half of bridge in “A Day in the Life”) also were dropping the same acid at the same time.

Correction: Billy Joe Royal dropped that acid in 1967, simultaneously with the Beatles. His song was covered by Deep Purple in 1968.

Band na!.. oh, wait.

Thanks, I remember that thread now. Now the oldies station aren’t even playing much of the good stuff from that era anymore. WLS-FM’s playlist seems to consist of 50% Journey, Survivor, and Foreigner, and 50% other stuff that isn’t good enough for classic rock stations.

I turned 7 that year and I remember the grownups around were, how shall we say, a bit on edge whenever the news were on, y’know?

Things get heavy on the rock side this year right from the start. Cream gets my vote.

Big Cream fan…the reunion was everything you could have asked it to be…and in time!! RIP Jack Bruce… Born is kinda overrated imo… This is one of SLy’s best songs… but the one I picked is one of the finest pop songs ever imo…Midnight Confessions by Grass Roots has everything you want… Co lead vocals…harmony… the middle part… just topnotch
