The thread in MPSIMS regarding the death of Jeff MacNelly made me think of putting this question here as a poll: Who do you think is the best political cartoonist in the USA, at this time?

My top three choices:

1. Mike Luckovich
2. Doug Marlette
3. Tom Toles

My personal opinion is that Toles is the best of those three, and the best of any daily-newspaper editorial-page cartoonists today.

However, I prefer Ruben Bolling’s “Tom the Dancing Bug” and Tom Tomorrow’s “This Modern World”, which are a bit too edgy for op-ed, to any of the daily papers’ editorial cartoonists, including Toles.

You can find both of them on [Salon.com’s comics page](http://salon.com/comics/index.html), if you’d like to check them out.

Only Doyle has any interest for me, but he spends to much time on Republicans, who just aren’t well known.

I agree with firefly, Bolling and especially Tomorrow are the best. I think it’s because of their blunt honesty and willingness to hold nothing sacred. The best dead political cartoonist of all time will always be the indispensible Thomas Nast.

The best political cartoonist bar none is ted rall. He can be found at the NYTimes and at [http://www.rall.com](http://www.rall.com)

Go ahead, read him, soon you will all agree with me!

I liked Jules Pfeiffer from the Villiage Voice. The voice lost its credibility as one of the top newspapers when he was gone.

I agree with Firefly about who are the funniest OpEd cartoons. (I got introduced to Tom the Dancing Bug via the Post’s Weekend section.)

Those who are good artist are Pat Olphant, and Herbert Block (Herblock) as well as the late Jeff MacNelly.

My faves are (in no particular order)
Paul Conrad from the LA Times
Jeff Macnelly
Ruben Bolling and Tom Tomorrow
and Tom Toles.

There’s a cool magazine called “Comic Relief” that reprints a lot of political cartoons… look for it at your favorite large newsstand, or for more information write:

Comic Relief Subscriptions
P.O. Box 6606
Eureka, CA 95502-6606

It’s expensive, tho ($35 a year for 12 issues).
