Dang, Ethilrist, you’re really good at finding seriously puzzling ones. Is that another veiled hint, by the way, since DAR is short for “Daughters of the American Revolution”? Should I be looking for something to do with a “republic” of some sort? GAR, for anyone who’s interested, was a society called “Grand Army of the Republic”. Evidently it had some SERIOUS political clout at one point. I got curious about it when I saw GAR star medallions next to a BUNCH of tombstones in various cemeteries around here, and did some investigating. Though it WAS this question by Ethilrist that got me really looking into it, so I have him to thank for the answer to my long-standing question of “I wonder what those mean, anyway.” Thanks, Ethilrist! (By the way, anyone who’s interested in learning more about the GAR can read a decent short history [here](http://suvcw.org/gar.htm). ---
