Best small, economical cars?

more Honda gushing here …

I **love ** my Civic. It’s a '94 with 236,000 miles on it, and I can get 50 mpg on the highway if I drive at (or near) the speed limit. (around 45 mpg if I’m really rushing, or commuting to Manhattan)

I have friends where the whole family drives Hondas. They just got a new Fit and are very happy with it.

What FairyChatMom said. My Scion xA gets great gas mileage (I’m averaging 36-37 mpg in West Palm Beach traffic) and it came with several features, such as anti-lock brakes, that are considered extras on many other makes and models. The seats are higher than those in most little cars, and there’s plenty of leg room in the back seats. I got mine for just over $15K back in Nov. 05. Definitely worth checking out.

We bought a Civic last year for my daughter to drive around, and it’s a great little car. I’ve driven it instead of my Audi a few times on trips, just because of the great gas mileage. I got over 40 mpg on one tank, and average around 38-39 mpg on the highway. It’s a nice zippy little car to drive, too, and has some nice features (anti-lock breaks, airbags all around, cruise control, power windows, etc.). The only thing I don’t like are the headrests - they’re at a weird angle for me.

Not meaning to pick on you at all*, but I still can’t quite believe it when I see people describing less than 30 mpg as ‘great’.
Some of this is skewed perception - because a UK gallon is ~1.2 US gallons, but even so, I just can’t quite get my head around it.

*[sup]Honestly - I mean no offence - it’s just that your post is a good example of what I’m talking about[/sup]
