Stretch Armstrong, hm? That reminds me of this slime we bought that came in little plastic garbage cans.
LEGOS were king of toys.
Born in '56. Barbie Dolls and Barbie clothes rocked. As did board games, EZ-Bake ovens, doll houses, dolls, and books/records.
Got a bucket of slime for Christmas one year and it made my hands break out in hives!
Let’s see…
G.I.Joe: A Real American Hero
Transformers
M.A.S.K.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
Legos
Star Wars
Another small cultural difference I’ve noticed here. We call them Lego. You call them Legos.
We took the “s” from “maths” and repurposed it.
But seriously, this debate has raged in other threads, that the plural of Lego is Lego.
Dude, I came into the thread just to mention this! Probably the coolest concept for a kids’ toy in the eighties; the perfect mix of cool, creative, and gruesome. My only complaint was that the flesh didn’t dissolve nearly as quickly as it did in the commercials; it was more of a slow burn.
They also did a “dissect an alien” kit that contained a lot of fun goo and guts.
I not only remember them I still have one. I occasionally annoy the cats with it.
We had those giant Tinker Toys too, back in the early 70s I think. Man, they were a lot of fun.
I would definitely want to be at that barbecue. I don’t care how far the drive is.
Also,
my favorite toy was my bike. I had several, but my dad bought me a nice one and I miss it so much. It was a GT/Dyno.
And I loved matchbox cars. And anything explosive. Probably anything flammable as well.

Oh! and Legos! I forgot about Legos!

And this would be the pistol that my older brother shot me with on a regular basis. Then made me retrieve the bullets so he could shoot me some more. Good times.
- Meccano
- 201 (Could be 101, or 150, or something like that) Electronics kit from Radio Shack. It was the best kit they had at the time. I made radios, transmitters that I blocked my sisters FM radio reception with, bugs that I bugged her room with, all sorts of things I annoyed her with. And I learned something, too.
- Generic Pellet gun - which I shot my sister with.
Gee, I wonder why my sister hasn’t talked to me for 20 years now?
Please tell me your user name doesn’t indicate an escalation in equipment?
If it had she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to not talk to me for 20 years! The reason I shot her (technically: shot at her in a vague sort of way) with the pellet gun was I was playing with kids I was told I shouldn’t be playing with and she was on her bike doing her typical spiel, “I’m telling!” as she rode away. Parents, being the blind sort they are, didn’t realize I was the type of person the kids probably shouldn’t have been playing with, not the other way round,…so to speak. I think it was a delayed reaction of her coming at me with a knife one time. I think I was 12 at the time. She was 10. All fun and games at the Uzi family residence I can tell you.
And yet, the plural of Eggo is Eggos. What a world.
Born in '74…
All time number one has to be Legos. But a close second was the big sandbox (10’ by 6’ or so I think…) my dad made for me. I had a nice set of steel Tonka/Ertl construction vehicles which were great fun to play with in the sandbox. And they’re all mostly still in great shape and boxed away in my parent’s house for the next generation to enjoy. The Legos too.
In the semi-dangerous toys category, my favorite was a water rocket. I also had a wrist rocket sling shot for a time…extremely dangerous…my mom probably save me some legal troubles by taking it away from me.
Hmmm, I used to love playing with fiddle sticks. I’m not sure what made me think of that.
Must be because we’re the same age. I remember those things. Being a boy, I was only into them at 5 or so. My older sister loved them, though. I was relieved when the guinea pig escaped and ate their limbs off.
Since the American Flyer (Fastest Way to a Hospital) was already mentioned, how about Stingray bikes with banana seats? We used to jump tires and concrete blocks with them, because, basically, we were idiots.
Legos and Tinkertoys at a young age. Football and baseball stuff at an older age, but, my favorites were
Balsa Wood Airplanes
Ok, our’s weren’t that fancy, but check out the lil dude in the hat.
