Best treatment for hip pain

I’ve set up an appointment with my PCP (I’m way overdue anyway).

Meanwhile, a horsey person we know suggested I try stirrup swivels. Got a set from a seller on Amazon, and rode 90 minutes today with minimal pain.

Maybe coincidence, but the stirrup swivels sure are comfortable!

I’m glad you are more comfortable and I doubt it is a coincidence - this indicates your pain is from loss of flexibility. so, the stirrup moves as you are less able to.

you might, gently, try something like **soothe your joints ** a 10 minute video that makes me feel better.

I am not a doctor, stop if you have sudden pain, do all movements slowly blah blah blah

As Doctor Jackson said (and s/he is no doubt far more qualified than I), a lot of treatments are possible. And the root cause may not be a hip problem at all. Referred pain is a problem.

I keep an SI/lower lumbar problem under control with pain meds, exercise/PT, massage, and occasional steroid injections. I’ve asked my doc to set up an MRI referral to be sure it isn’t a hip problem (my mum had a hip replacement), because I’d rather know what it is than not.

Hope you get extended relief.

So, I saw my PCP the first week in June. I told him what was going on and he was all, “of course your hips hurt if you ride a horse. That’s a crazy thing to do”. I explained that I could ride last year without pain and now it hurt like hell. He wanted me to go a month without causing the pain (horseback riding), then if it remained an issue he’d set up an ortho consult.

Since then I’ve cleverly avoided riding. We have friends who want to ride, friends kids who want to ride, neighbors who want to ride, etc. I never told my gf about the doctor visit, but I managed to avoid riding in June and July, all the while seeming a gracious host.

Yesterday she spontaneously asked me to ride with her. I didn’t have an excuse, so I rode, all the while fearing the pain.

I mounted easily and there was not so much as a twinge. We rode 2 hours. No pain. I’m ecstatic, but puzzled. Why did I have such horrible pain, and now not even a bit of discomfort?

Might have been that tantric sex position you tried before the pain started. (At your age, I’m surprised you’ve got the energy!) Having given it a rest, perhaps the injury had chance to heal (?).

Seriously, I’m not much younger than you and pretty physically fit for a guy half my age. Stealth bragging aside, I find I have inexplicable aches and pains that come and go randomly and some old injuries that just fire up at random and then go away when I give myself the permission to lay off and heal.

In short, we’re facing the reality that nothing good comes with age. Glad you’re feeling better.

“You and I” = we, thus “are” not “am.”
