In the late 50s there was a cartoon on the Captain Kangaroo show called Tom Terrific. One of the characters in the cartoon had a name that made me laugh, then and now: Isotope Feaney ---

You can’t mention Seinfeld without “Cosmo Kramer.” “Growing Pains” had established that Mike’s long time friend was called “Boner.” Eventually it came out that his real name was Richard Stabone, and his father’s name was Sylvester. Mike: Wait a minute. Your father’s name is Sylvester Stabone? Boner: Who knew? ---

I think _Family Guy_ has some great names- Glenn Quagmire is one of my favourites. It’s odd enough to be a great “Joke name”, but serious enough to actually be someone’s name. _Futurama_’s Bender Bending Rodriguez is also sublimely brilliant, too. ---

The long-ago superhero comedy **Captain Nice** , which starred a pre-KITT (and even a pre-John adams) William Daniels as Carter Nash\* had a policewoman named **Candy Kane**. And what about **The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.** , **April Dancer** Female operatives are a great source for James Bondesque cute names, like the eponymous **Honey West** But, of course, you can’t beeat **Emma Peel** from **The Avengers**. Reportedly, she was chosen for her Appeal to a Male Audience (“M Appeal” = “Emma Peel”). don’t know if it’s true, but it’s cute. His belt buckle had “CN” on it, so when he appeared “in costume” with it showing and was asked what it stood for, he came up with “Captain Nice”. Oh, well, ay least it’s marginally better than his competition (opposite him in the same time slot) – “Mr. Terrific”. He didn’t have an initialed belt buckle. ---

Some old guy who used to write for a _lot_ of TV series in the 70s and 80s - I assume he was old, and that there was just one of him - got into the habit of naming supporting characters after forgotten 30s and 40s jazz musicians. I caught on after an ep of _Murder, She Wrote_ where a Russian diplomat was named [“Serge Chaloff”](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serge_Chaloff). ---
