OK, now I gotta watch Chet when I get home from work.
As far as I know, there are only five CGPs: John Knowles, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, Steve Wariner, and Jerry Reed. Now that Chet is gone, I wonder if there will ever be any more. Was that an honor only Chet could bestow?
FGiE - Chet is no shredder but as an exemplar of perfect, clean technique, he has no peer. His use of octave-plucked harmonics at the beginning of the piece - Lenny Breau was a master, too - is just amazing.
Here’sAtkins and Jerry Reed (a Certified Guitar Player, for sure) hamming it up on Jerry’s Breakdown - so good I wanna smack 'em
ETA: **Labdad **- you know your guitar and blues; I wish you hung out in these threads more often! It was a fun honorific bestowed by Mr. Atkins - it was never anything official. There are stories in guitar-geek interviews of him annointing folks like Mark Knopfler (whom he respected and recorded albums with), Les Paul, Steve Lukather, and others - but I am not sure and have no cites.
Thank you! I read most of these threads and contribute when I think I have something to offer.
Not a shredder, you say? Did you catch what Chet did at about 1:14-1:16 in the video you posted?
Dude, he can sweep pick like nobody’s business.
Evidently…he can. That was always one “trick” I wanted to learn but never could pull off properly. At least not cleanly.
