> The Last Starfighter - Centauri rips his mask off so triumphantly! I love that scene.

Her _puts his mask on_ so triumphantly. Although he loves his human disguise like he does his hat or a pair of well-worn shoes, it is just a disguise. That blue face is his real one.

I agree that it is a good scene. Until Centauri takes of his mask in the star car, we don’t know it’s a mask. There’s an alien android who can change shape and remove his own head for maintenance. There’s an alien assassin who can also change shape. The capabilities and physiology of the various aliens is unclear. So when Centauri says “I was merely dormant until my body repaired itself.” the audience has no reason to object. Centauri is not human. Who knows where or what his vital organs are? Besides which, Centauri being a conman with a heart of gold, probably deliberately milked the scene to convince Alex to fly the mission.

‘He knicked my tertiary renal organ. I’ll sleep for a few days and be just fine. Oh, um, I really mean AAAHHH! I’m dying. Save. . . the . . . galaxy. Fly . . . the . . . mission.’

Re Seven

Agreed.

I have a couple of favorites, although I don’t know as they’re really good enough to be in the “best” category.

Favorite #1:_Silverado_

When Emmett rescues his nephew Augie, Augie tearfully informs him that Jake is dead. Emmett asks how, and Augie explains that Jake was riding along the edge of a cliff and fell off his horse. Emmett repeats “Jake fell off his horse…” with a subtle smirk that says only little boys and bad guys could possibly believe that. The audience knows immediately that Jake is just up to some trick again. Great scene by Scott Glenn.

Favorite #2:_Hellboy_

Our heroine Liz is really dead. Hellboy brings her back by threatening the powers on the other side that if they don’t let her go he’ll cross over, and then they’ll be sorry. Nice twist on what could easily have been a bad, bad cliche.

> As with many things science-fictiony, though, the reasoning is simple: because it looks cool.

The Alliance troops were trying to get into the compound, and accidentally hit the remote “Open” button for the wrong door?

While River was stretching her arms?

That’s the ticket!

Not buying it. Being “The One” means having special abilities _within the matrix_, not that you’re able to resurrect yourself in the real world. They overstepped the bounds.

Nah, I reckon that was deliberately put there as a bladder break. A nice few minutes of dreaminess while everyone pops out to the loo.

If memory serves me right, Alan Arkin in Wait Until Dark was the first to do that. It spawned about a million copies and it is worn out. Stop t . stop t now. Aklso it was a movie with real acting talent.

The mechanism by which death in the Matrix leads to real-life death is unclear, though. Being _El Uno_ and _knowing_ it (with a few reminders from your yappy girlfriend) may be sufficient to convince you of the Matrix’s fundamental unreality and let you shrug off getting ten or twelve virtual .50-cal rounds to the virtual chest. I’d guess this understanding goes far deeper than that of the other rebels, who although they _claim_ to know the Matrix is a dream, can only bring themselves to bend rather than break its rules.
Whoa.
