It’s possible to be a good Conservative.

Mainstream Republicans are not Conservative.

Mainstream Republicans are either Reactionary or so far gone with ignorant tribalism they don’t have a cogent political ideology. (Or, perhaps better: The cogent ideology they do have is cultural, not really political.)

It breaks down like this: A Conservative is someone who wants measured change, because they think that the current setup is, on the whole, fairly workable, and needs to be patched and improved, not scrapped. They also aren’t teleological, in that they don’t think there’s an end-point to history (_pacem_ Fukuyama) the way Marxists do: A Conservative is different from a Fabian in that the Fabian is actively working towards Socialism, which they believe to be the end of history in political and historical terms, the point all history is driving towards as per the warmed-over Hegel Marx was enamored of.

A Reactionary wants to go back to some past state, undoing progress made and recreating some imagined utopia before Those People got their filthy hands on it and perverted the Eden we once had.

A Progressive wants to redo large sections of society but leave the roots untouched. They want faster change, but don’t want to dynamite the whole thing.

The GOP has been a Reactionary party ever since it absorbed the people who wanted to turn back the clock on Civil Rights. It’s drifted a bit further in that direction since then, but, more importantly, it’s become a tribal affiliation for what’s often called the Moral Majority, the Purity Cult Christians who think the biggest parts of Jesus’ message were obedience to sexual laws and keeping the household under control of the patriarch. These people see the modern state of sexual laws post-_Griswold_ (yes, _Griswold_: the decisions you’ve heard of (_Roe v Wade_, _Lawrence_, _Obergefell_) all rely on _Griswold v Connecticut_) and post-[coverture](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coverture) and see a society which is utterly, irredeemably broken, and which must be destroyed root and branch before it is ritually pure again. These people are called single-issue voters, that issue being abortion and/or marriage equality, but it goes deeper than that: Even if the Democrats went 180° on abortion but kept their opposition to school prayer, marital rape, and everything else which separates us from _The Handmaid’s Tale_, they’d still see the Democrats as pure evil.

The other part of the Red Tribe the Republicans represent is Gun Nation, the people who see guns as part of a larger way of life including the Right To Revolt and, therefore, see any attempt at gun control to be equivalent to taking away their ability to control the government. In a way, they’re right: They’re a minority, and in any system which even pretends to represent groups fairly, they _wouldn’t_ have much control over Federal affairs. But their guns don’t give them the control they currently have: Gerrymandering does that, along with their alliance with the Moral Majority.

So, who speaks for the Conservatives? Most of the Democratic Party, which is also the party a lot of the Progressives fell in line with, which is part of the reason Hillary vs Bernie got so heated, even though Sanders was never so Progressive as he was painted. The other part is simple sexism, which, no, _wasn’t_ entirely due to the Russians, although they likely had a hand in it.

You know who else said that all Republicans are evil? Donald Trump. He said that he could shoot someone in the face on live TV, and not lose one single voter. In other words, every single one of his supporters is sufficiently morally bankrupt that they don’t care about literal murder.

> [@Budget\_Player\_Cadet](#):
>
> I was gonna post this in the thread I’m quoting you from, but it’s kind of out there for ATMB, so let’s do it here instead.
>
> The **current** republican congress has gained victory first and foremost by **decimating democratic norms and grabbing power wherever they can**. Many of their number are just straight-up terrible people, like **Louie Gohmert or Steve King. Racists, white nationalists, conspiracy theorists, science denialists** … And that’s congress. The current republican president is not just phenomenally unpopular, but stupid, gross, vapid, and dangerous - and literally everyone except united states conservatives seem to grasp that. The point here being that the room for conservative republicans to be reasonable or rational has shrunk drastically. It is not a coincidence that when you think “republican on the dope whose posts you’re glad to read” it’s usually a pretty short list - at this point, the **partisan** split in America is very much between the smart party and the dumb party, and so you end up with a situation where smart people flee the republican party in droves, and those who remain have to make **ever-more-extravagant concessions** to the party. “No, really, it’s okay to support Trump, because…” Looking for a smart, reasonable, rational republican is becoming more and more like looking for a smart, reasonable, rational young earth creationist.
>
> This isn’t just a problem on the Dope. We usually get the _better_ ones, because we filter. We have our “echo chamber”, which means that people whose entire schtick is post after post after post of “GET ON THE TRUMP TRAIN, NEXT STOP **PWNING-THE-LIBS-VILLE** ”\* doesn’t get to stick around. Go to **ChristianForums** , and you’ll see what happens when the echo chamber is expanded to include that kind of person - discussion does not get _better_, it gets _impossible_ unless everyone with half a brain collectively blocks the fuckers. Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, the “smart” people who endorse Trump? Yeah, they’re mostly hardline single-issue voters, and that issue is often _ **race** _. The Trump supporters on rationalist forums generally hold that we need to keep the unwashed hordes at bay via better immigration laws to protect American interests because they have lower IQs and that’s genetic and _you see where this is going_. Again, we tend to filter those people out; “being a shitty racist” is one of the things the mods tend to take poorly to.
>
> Let’s take the Kavanaugh thread for example. Is it a coincidence that _every single republican there_ has staked out a position pretty damn close to **Starving Artist**? **UltraVires** has _also_ offered **truly disgusting rationalizations** for what’s going on, to the point where I’m shocked that **SA** took a vacation first (“maybe he wasn’t actually trying to rape her” - fucking really!). **Shodan** got a warning for making a pretty fucking gross, **victim-blamey** rape joke. Both **UltraVires** and **Shodan** believe that this is a democratic “playbook”, and that if this succeeds, the same thing will happen to every republican judicial candidate brought forward afterwards. And why shouldn’t they believe that? That’s _mainstream republican thought now!_ Their president was elected despite 22 fucking accusations of sexual assault, and _bragging about it on tape_; if you don’t think that this is a democratic playbook, how the fuck else do you rationalize this? If you start accepting that most women don’t report being sexually assaulted because of the consequences, if you look at what’s happened to Ford’s life since she made the accusation\*\*, if you pay any attention to #MeToo, if you don’t pretend that all these accusations were bogus against Trump… Well, then you have to come to terms with the fact that you voted for a serial sexual abuser to be the leader of the free world. And at that point, why not just fucking double down on his supreme court nominee?
>
> So **I don’t know where you want to go to find “better” conservatives**. **They don’t exist**. Or rather, to the degree that they do, they’re not republicans any more. They’re independents or democrats. Because decent people don’t support Trump. Decent people don’t support Kavanaugh. Decent people don’t vote republican. There is _no such thing as a good republican_. No good republican pundit. No good republican politician. No good republican justice. No good republican voter. _Period_. They do not exist any more; being a republican disqualifies you as a decent person.
>
> \*I’m really not exaggerating for effect here. Seriously. You do _not_ want the /r/The\_Donald crowd around any rational discussion.
>
> \*\*Doxxing, death threats, driven out of her fucking home, [and don’t even think for a goddamn minute that **UltraVires** wasn’t fucking scum about _that_, too](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=21220205&highlight=doxxed#post21220205).

I don’t care to look for any “good ones” at this point, and they aren’t what used to b conservative anyway. They are racists, sexists, fascists, Nazis, dominionists, and are so fucking “tribal” that winning really is everything - no matter what the cost to anyone.

And the so called “reasonable” ones, the “smart” ones, look the other way and try to justify it. Letting it all go to shit so long as they get their single issue (whichever one that may be).
Oh yeah. They act like animals, they say all sorts of nasty bullshit (not PC) and then cry like bitches if they feel “disrespected” or not fawned over.
Trump was their boy, and he personifies everything about them, with his buddies Gorka, Bannon, Flynn, Sessions, Moore, etc etc etc.
And now, even treason is acceptable to them, as long as their side “wins”. To hell with every last stinking one of them.

But aren’t the senators/presidential staff white-anting Trump because they think he’s hopeless? What about them? Not all of the republicans seem to be cut from exactly the same cloth.

Not everybody goes online. It’s easy to get a distorted view about any issue/special interest from online groups and forums. For every person on the puppy dog board raving about their new poodle, there are many who are down the beach running about with their dog.

How can you possibly say that there aren’t rational, honest people sitting in their loungerooms, or working in their deli or wherever who vote/d republican? You can certainly throw the book at the shitheads online and on tv from the rubbish they talk, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that EVERYONE is like that.

EDIT: what about that McCain bloke? He seemed a pretty decent enough type, wasn’t he?

How on earth would I know?

All I’m saying is that broad, sweeping, hyperbolic statements rather than focussing on specific issues and specific shitheads sound just as unreasonable as the likes of Starving Artist with his “democrats ruined my life by allowing time to run since the 1950s” bleatings.

Which prominent Trump-supporting rank and file are responsible for this?

😕 Is English your first language? Start by Googling ‘zero’ and ‘evidence.’ Do you think ‘reasonable doubt of guilt’ and ‘zero evidence’ are synonymous?

What would it take for you to consider it ‘evidence’? The saliva-stained shirt Dr. Ford carefully preserved from 36 years ago?

**Quartz** is a Village Idiot. He pretends at being moderate even as he poisons the well by making tendentious statement, whinges about how unfair everyone is to him even as he espouses bigotry and misogyny, and generally dissembles on a wide array of topics. Arguing with him is like wrestling a pig; you just get shit all over you while the pig squeals in eardrum-piercing tones.
