Someone completely unrelated to us has my brother’s first and last name, and is on a plaque of the “nerot tamidim” (that are not lit all the time, only for the first year, then on their yahrzeit dates, but everyone calls them that anyway). Which means he’s dead, has been dead, and someone paid for a commemorative plaque. They run along he walls of the inside of the main sanctuary. I make a point of sitting where I can’t see it. My son thinks it’s funny that it upsets me. Admittedly, there are probably few synagogues that _haven’t_ had a “Joshua Goldhammer” at some point. As the boychik says, if his name were “Itamar De Castro y Saperstein,” it would be different. I still get weirded out. ---
