P.S. I couldn’t give a toss if a thread of mine is closed. It’s the mod’s perrogative. (And I am used to it)

Seems to me that Lobsang’s pit thread is more of a humorous rant about dieting, rather than an out-and-out joke thread. elmwood’s thread was much more ambiguous, because it wasn’t clear if he was actually ranting about the various “sacred cows” of the SDMB. Also, his thread wasn’t original. I’ve seen a dozen other Pit threads making exactly the same joke. I imagine Lynn has seen ten times that number. And it wasn’t that great of a joke in the first place. I’m not surprised she came down on it as hard as she did.
You thought that elmwood’s OP in the closed thread was ambiguous?
Are you whooshing us Miller, 'cos I doubt that even a ten-year old could fail to see the ‘point’ of the OP.
:dubious:
Yes, ambiguous. Also, pointless. Also, unoriginal. Why is it such a bad thing that it got locked again?
For what it’s worth, I opened elmwood’s thread and thought: “Oh-oh, joke thread. Not long for this world.” And I like Pit rants that use humor. I’d say Mangetout and Metacom nailed it.
As to Lobsang’s thread, I think what elmwood said about his own thread applies:
I dont know why it’s survived so far, and if it were mine I’d be emailing Lynn to apologize for putting it in the wrong forum and asking her to move it. YMMV, of course.
My rule of thumb for posting rants: If your blood pressure is normal, it probably belongs in MPSIMS.
“(How many times am I gonna have to suspend people before it sinks in that I MEAN no joke threads in the pit?)”
Judging by that (from esprix’s link) I think I best e-mail lynn to get mine closed. It looks like joke threads (even if they are inspired by true will to rant) are not well liked.
P.S. Don’t you just hate it when you’ve hit the insert key by mistake halfway through inserting some text? (so it goes into overtype mode)
It’s not that it got locked, it’s the severity of the warning and the inconsistency of enforcement of the “no jokes” rule that I’m miffed about. I’ve seen hate speech with gentle “please don’t do that” warnings, but I get a warning in a manner that is typically used for the likes of Handy … as a last resort, at that. I get the feeling tha a Grapist-spawned thread would have stayed open longer than my pathetic, misguided attempt at parody.
Then again, Lynn is from Texas, where the Rangers probably bring 'Ol Sparky to Dopefests if anyone gets out of line. BTW, more than 24 hours later and still no response from her.
Now you’re going to far, and are teetering on the brink of being pathological. :smack:
Note that she hasn’t banned anyone, or really even threatened to, over the joke threads in the pit. She suspends, and she’s threatened to suspend, but you’re probably a safe distance from being banned, eh? The Grapist has been banned (a lot, I gather), and his threads get deleted–expunged forever from the Dope. Not even in the same league as you. As for the “Lynn has it out for me!” schtick, maybe she does, maybe she doesn’t–ultimately, it doesn’t matter that much, because you’d still need a demonstrated history of rule breaking and she’d need another mod to sign off on it. So you’re relatively vendetta safe.
And if she is out to get you, publicly goading her into responding to you probably isn’t gonna make her like you any more (note that this is an understatement).
You’ve complained in the pit, you’ve got affirmation that maybe her warning was a little harsh: IMHO, it’s time to shrug and walk away. And maybe ask a mod to close this if posting again would be too tempting.
I agree; sometimes naughty children get slapped harder than they deserve; it just happens.
The difference I see between Lobsang and elmwood’s threads is that Lob is bitching about something for real while elm is not.
As for the extra hard slap, I dunno. That Lynn, she scares the fuck outta me.
That was your second warning in less than a week. I usually issue a sterner warning for the second offense, especially when it comes close on the heels of the first offense. Your first warning was for posting a real life name and phone number, saying that of course you wouldn’t DREAM of urging anyone to call him, wink wink nudge nudge. That was a pretty severe offense. This second offense is something that I’ve suspended other posters for in the past, and I’ve made it perfectly clear that we are NOT gonna have game/joke threads in the Pit.
From elmwood
That’s not what you said in your letter. You said that you “forgot”, and then complained that I hadn’t closed down another thread.
I frequently go to other forums for several hours when I’ve had enough of the Pit for one reason or another. I don’t feel obliged to monitor the Pit every second of the day. There are times when I’m in the Pit, see a thread, and respond immediately. There are other times when I want to kick back and enjoy the SDMB. I was a poster before I became a mod and then admin, and I still enjoy reading and posting regularly. I think that this is one of the very best message boards around, and I don’t want to spend ALL my time in the Pit. Heck, the Pit isn’t even one of my favorite forums. I spend a LOT more time reading GQ (though I don’t often post there) and the social forums.
