Everybody thinks their hobbies are interesting, and most people are self-aware enough to know not everyone is intrigued by their interests. The UK’s hobby is the Royals. They live in a golden terrarium where they can be studied endlessly, and from which few escape. It’s nice and polite to have Dr Jill attend. If I got a new puppy, I’d like to have my friends get to know her.
I don’t know… It seems to be human nature to want to have a king, and a lot of Americans seem to have reacted to that nature by trying to turn the President into a king. I think it just might be safer to leave an official but powerless monarch in place, just to act as a focal point and distraction for all those folks.
And yes, the Governor General Mary Simon will attend the coronation. This was announced earlier, and was no surprise. There will be quite a few other Canadians attending as well.
And it’s now been announced that the Governors-General are going to perform an entirely new function at this coronation, of bestowing some sort of collective greeting on the King as he departs, which almost sounds like a secular blessing (it comes directly after a greeting by non-Christian faith leaders).
The Liturgy does show the text of the greeting given by the “faith communities,” but does not go into any specifics about the greeting given by the Governors-General.
The Faith Communities greeting: “Your Majesty, as neighbours in faith, we acknowledge the value of public service. We unite with people of all faiths and beliefs in thanksgiving, and in service with you for the common good.”
Since this seems to be the de facto thread for the coronation in general, I wonder what the reaction is to replacing the homage by the Peers with one by “the people” will be:
[Archbishop of Canterbury] I call upon all persons of goodwill of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other Realms and the Territories to make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted King, defender of all. All who so desire, in the Abbey, and elsewhere, say together:
[Audience] I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.
ISTM it’s sharing the load with the “Reign of Charles III” thread, as people may feel like reacting to something said in one or the other, but more focused on who’s there doing what.
Eh, so whoever feels like it can affirm their allegiance. Or not. Pretty much par for the course these days. IIRC though Wills will perform a homage on behalf of the coronetted class (who apparently will not have to wear theirs)?
OTOH as I’ve mentioned elsewhere, relative to those of their Continental cousins, even a partly-nerfed Brit coronation will look/sound impressive.
Not on behalf of the “coronetted class,” but “of the Royal Blood.” His oath will not make any reference to his being Duke of Cambridge - only as Prince of Wales. The only three oaths of homage are by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Prince William, and “The People.”
Link to the “authorized Liturgy” of the coronation. I noticed that the Epistle and the Gospel are different than from Elizabeth II’s coronation, where they were “Fear God. Honor the King” and “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s.”
