Biggest Cities without famous bands/music scenes?

How about San Jose? There ain’t crap for music or clubs here…

Oddly enough, Orlando has produced no good, popular bands that I can think of.

Good: No

Popular: Unfortuantely, yes. Matchbox 20, N’Sync, and the Backstreet Boys all seem to have crawled out of Orlando.

Limp Bizkit, Miami Sound Machine, Marilyn Manson, 2 Live Crew, and Creed are all from Florida as well, which makes me wonder if any good bands actually exist there.

And since I might have inspired this thread with my comments about Dallas and Houston above, I still don’t think “Dallas” or “Houston” when I think of any specific bands. I didn’t mean to say that there are NO bands from these cities, just not any definitive scene that I’m privy too.

Wilco is from St Louis… sort of. They actually formed out of the break-up of Uncle Tupelo, a band from the St Louis area (Belleville IL, also famous for Jimmy Connors). However I believe they are now based out of Chicago. So that probably doesn’t count. The only other band I can remember from St Louis was the 70’s one-hit wonder “Head East”.

Chuck Brown is a pretty important guy in that he is the virtual inventor of an entire genre of music, albeit a rather obscure one. There is still a vibrant amateur recording industry here in DC, and any time now home-burned go-go cds are bound to start proliferating the Internet as some of the only truly free and legal tunes you’ll be able to find.

Washington DC’s go-go is going to take over the world by default–just you watch!

…And Baltimore has Kix!

I too was going to lament Denver’s lack of bands, but… WINGER??. Oh my fucking god!! I had no idea!

I suppose Big Head Todd counts. I was also going to mention that, while they’re not famous, Seraphim Shock is a decent Denver band if you like that kind of music. And I personally do.

I don’t think they hated it, but there is no scene to speak of here now that Wildhare’s (which may have fit 150 people) has closed.

I imagine most places with at least a few thousand people have produced a band or performer at one point, but only major metro areas or cultural hotspots can claim a “scene”.

Well, don’t forget Country Music!

Some major Country Music stars from Oklahoma City (or nearby):

Garth Brooks

Reba McEntire

Toby Keith

Vince Gill

(Yes, I consider Stillwater, Mustang, Norman, to be close to the OKC. Close enough, anyways.)
Poor Tulsa, though… All I can think of from T-Town is Hanson!

Mmm-bopp! Bippy-bopp, bopp-mm-bopp!

Don’t forget Frank Zappa was from Baltimore. Mobtown is also home to the best singer that you’ve never heard of, Mary Prankster. Mary will be playing Jonathan Chance’s annual Spring dopefest at the Chance estate June 28, anyone in the area should get their asses there if they want to hear music that quite simply, flat out ROCKS.

DC, clearly.

The best #1 we’ve produced: Starland Vocal Band’s Afternoon Delight.

Other that that what? Jodi Watley? Jimmy’s Chicken Shack? Emmet Swimming?

sigh I thought we were going to make it big in the late 90s…

I nominate Omaha. Apart from that crappy 311, we don’t have crap.
