From what I hear though, Gary worked awesome at the live shows, because his style worked for the Roth songs and Hagar songs alike. And since he was a huge Van Halen fan without an ego, he worked his ass off to do the songs well live, whereas Hagar used to just phone in the Roth songs and I don’t think Roth does ANY Hagar material. If Van Halen had stuck with him it probably would have worked out. III wasn’t bad for a first album with a new singer. ---

Somebody mentioned AC/DC, which reminds me: “Thunderstruck” makes my skin crawl. ---

In the case of Genesis and Maiden, the singer change didn’t matter, the bands were already commercially failing. And I’d note that in Maiden’s case, the musical change that began with X Factor has continued to this day with Dickinson back. ---

It always amazes me the love people have for Hey nineteen and other Gaucho songs. I am a total Dan fanatic and I simply can’t abide the disappointment of that song and the whole LP it’s on. Like where did the backbone go? ---

Also, in 1992, their tour for _We Can’t Dance_ generated the highest average per-venue gross of any musical act. Collins left in 1993 due to personal and health reasons. With Collins’s departure–that’s when they started to lose commercial steam. Before he left the band, they were at their absolute commercial peak. ---

Failing indeed. 😉 Several months ago, I had the classical station on as background noise, and after one piece, the announcer said, “…composed and conducted by Tony Banks.” Yep. That Tony Banks. Those mega-hits enabled him to do things like this. 🆒 ---

Can one be ninja’ed by the OP … I really don’t like any of The Beatles hit songs … but the rest are really good for the most part. Hate Pink Floyd’s _The Wall_ … but enjoy about everything else they did … that’s probably the biggest separation for me … what’s not to love in “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict” … just not hit material. ---

They were one of many bands that had a great year in 1991-1992 before the bottom fell out of the mainstream commercial rock market. We can never really know, but I can’t imagine a Phil Collins-led Genesis album selling even one million copies in 1995 or 1996. ---

I was a big Boston fan except for “Let Me Take You Home Tonight.” I used to really like Foreigner except for “Cold as Ice.” Both of those songs seemed really lousy compared to the bands’ other stuff.
