Do you ever watch Blue Collar Comedy? Well, they tend to stay away from politics but I have seen a guy from Texas that was pretty right wing and kind of funny. I remember a whole routine about the Death Penalty and how great it was and how people against it were, well, sissys.
While he was right in the broad strokes, rising obesity is bad, he was full of shit about just about everything else in his rant about food. MSG and aspartame horrible for you? Bullshit health scares. Farting and burping a sign that you’re eating stuff that’s bad for you? Hell, that’s how you tell that someone’s digestive system is working right! Know how to tell if someone’s gut has started working again after the anasthetic stops it for surgery? Listen for a fart!
The whole thing was a waste of time – I’ve heard it all before, and better, in the pit. His stupid half-laugh was even worse than Bob Sagats. The stupid cheering, every single time he made a half decent point… the standing ovation before he had opened his mouth…
He didn’t lose his job over 9/11, he lost it cause he’s bad at what he does. Give me Jon Stewart any day. uhehehehe.
Actually, IIRC, he did lose his job because of comments he made after 9/11.
I know that. IIRC he was saying how it takes bravery to fly a plane into a building, not to push a button to blow up a bomb. Accurate, but dumb thing to say immediately after.
“I’m from Texas, where we have the death penalty, and we USE IT.” - Ron White
Funniest damn guy on the BCCT. While that might be ‘right wing’, he also has a couple of bits where he reveals he doesn’t have a problem with gay people and makes fun of those that do. I don’t really think Ron White’s left or right wing, nor do I particularly care myself. He’s just a guy, like the others on the BCCT.
I used to be an avid fan of “Politically Incorrect” way back before it moved to mainstream t.v. Then it, along with Maher, went downhill. Like Dennis Miller, Maher became more strident in his political views, and predictably, less funny. I hope he’s found his niche again, which was always more of a common sense angle vs. a “right wing v. left wing” angle.
Face it, there’s no single “truth.” And anyone who thinks there is, and that he has a corner on it, is a moron.
Jon Stewart has successfully straddled the line for a few years. I hope he doesn’t lose his good humor or his edge, because the combination is refreshing and, honestly, kind of sexy.
Is HBO “mainstream TV”? His show now is great; he has panels of people from all viewpoints and he lets them have at it. He’s also a bit tougher on his guests who are FOS than Stewart is. I remember when he brought Ward Churchill out and had him talk to the brother of a 9/11 victim. Churchill actually apologized for his insensitivity. Pretty damn cool for someone who’s not actually a journalist.
Maher is a libertarian, so he calls bulllshit on the Dems when they warrant it. I find that libertarianism tends to be more consistent than the old Republican/Democratic party lines, which seem to shift based on political exigencies. Basically, Maher wants the government to stop playing Big Brother and mind its own business. That used to be considered a Republican party plank, but these days, it’s a POV nearly completely lost.
I’m rubber and you’re glue. I don’t think there’s a Truth, but there are things that are true. Maher says more true things than the average talking head, IMO, and he’s not afraid to say what he thinks even if it offends people or could get him fired. I admire his guts, a quality sorely lacking in the public forum these days. He also simply holds opinions that are very close to mine, which is a rare thing to find on TV for me. That’s not a matter of true v. false, it’s just a matter of ideology. I like hearing my ideology on TV for a change.
I love Jon Stewart and I am not knocking him, but he’s not a hard hitter. I like Stewart for his humor, his openness, and his adorably endearing style. I like Maher because he’s no-bullshit, calls it like he sees it, and is politically in a different place from most people. I think it’s comparing apples and oranges to hold them up against each other. Besides, I want both.
That would be Ron White (AKA Tatter Salad), who I don’t consider a right wing comedian. His personal views might be conservative but not his stand up act. Nobody but Dennis Miller has solid comedy that is pro-Bush.
His dog calls him Tater.
Okay, hijack done.
Wait … Rush Limbaugh isn’t a comedian?
Well, compared to Jack Chick he isn’t.
