> There are still \*racial \*problems in this country that ebb and flow at different times. You don’t think there will be gender and sexual orientation problems that ebb and flow at different times too, from now until eternity? And yes, I can see a trend of re-banning gay marriage. It’s not going to magically cease being an issue with some people. And I never would have thought there’d be a fight to go backwards on birth control, but there is.
>
> Cockiness that our side has won some sort of permanent victory is what ultimately sets us up for regression. Look at labor in Wisconsin. The birthplace of public sector unions. Who would ever have thought that such a stronghold of labor would suffer such massive setbacks at the hands of conservatives? Complacency and cockiness.
>
> “Never happen here. We’ve moved beyond it.” Famous last words. Everything happens in a cycle.

I guess we just have a very different view on reality. Issues like race, homosexuality, reproductive rights, etc. may not be \*strictly \*increasing, but they don’t “ebb and flow”. It’s a random walk with a very definite upward drift.

The Republicans tried to make birth control and issue. 99% of women use it. They’re not winning on it. A few of them decided to go hard line on abortion and come out in favor of rape. Every one of them lost. There’s no cycle here.

Stop being racists?

I know, I know, it’s quite the step and some people just aren’t cut out for learning new things.

I heard one radio pundit making a somewhat ironic point: by increasingly becoming the party of the majority (Whites) the GOP increasingly becomes a minority party.

The traditional power structure in America has indeed been as O’Reilly stated: White, more so White male, more so White Christian male. That power structure is not gone but it is not enough. Others have power too and they want things: education, a fair shake, opportunities, rights …

Romney won those White males solidly but he still lost. That’s good news for the country and of course for a party that appeals to the wide swath of everyone else. For now.

As a white protestant male, am I a traitor? I feel guilty voting for Obama now.

Nope. You are an _intelligent_ white protestant male.
