They weren’t traitors. They were wrong and terrible, but they were standing up for their traditions, the same ones every US President, Congress, and Supreme Court before A. Lincoln had explicitly defended. Calling them traitors not only misses the point, it implies that you’d condemn others as traitors for wrong-headed reasons. [/rant] Good OP. Made me laugh. ---

It becomes _treason_ when a declaration of war is involved (check) and/or attempts are made to enlist the aid of or join with foreign powers in overthrowing the country.
