Well, this one bears some scholarly work. 🙂 I think most people in this thread and pretty much the old thread agree that it seems to appear in and around 1985/86. It certainly was around by 1988. Other than the one report from someone in a link in the previous thread, it’s not remembered by anyone of an age before the mid-'80’s. Billy Idol moved to the US in or about 1981, and released a four-song EP with “Mony Mony” as one of the tracs. (also “Don’t Stop,” “Dancing with Myself”) I’ve started an inquiry with friends who would have been of the right age in the 1975-1984 period to have been places where this might have occured. I encourage you to do also. While there may be many false memories out there, the more reports we have the better. ---

Here in Oz we never chanted anything to Mony Mony, but the Angels hit “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?” was met with “no way! get fucked! fuck off!” and Smokie’s song “Livin’ Next Door to Alice” had us yelling “Alice? Alice? Who the fuck is Alice?” ---

I remember this quite vividly from the late 80s & early 90s. At one wedding I was at, the bride was terrified when a groomsman requested that the DJ play the song, for fear that the guys were all drunk enough to forget that her grandparents were there, and would let loose. They behaved themselves, thank goodness. ---

This may not be germane to the OP, but I saw Billy at the Oakland Arena in 1984. At one point of the performance (I can’t be sure if the song was _Mony, Mony_),he placed his guitar on his pelvis, gyrated à la Jimi Hendrix, and bellowed out “Suck my c\*ck!!!” The young teenage girls in the seats next to us were thrilled. ---

I graduated from high school in June of 1981. I clearly remember going to a dance at the high school when I was a Senior and hearing the band play “Mony, Mony”. The entire crowd of classmates hollered back: “…Hey…Hey What? Get laid…GET F\*CKED!” This was in Fallon, Nevada around 1980-1981. ---

And we welcome back this thread after a happy 10 years in digital limbo. Mentioned above last decade, but a whole new generation probably wants to know that the Australian 1970s band [the Angels](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_kNPiHUJUE) had a big hit with ‘Am I ever going to see your face again’, to which the crowd response was always ‘no way, get fucked, fuck off’, which seems to have originated in the early 1980s, so roughly contemporary with the US. ---

Oh, and to actually address the OP, the song was wildly popular when it came out in '81 and pretty much a staple at school dances -and then later bars- and I never heard people do this. It wasn’t until I came to Florida and I heard it in the beach bars here. ---

I saw Billy Idol in concert a few years ago and the crowd chanted the “Hey MF-er” version. This was in London, Ontario. I grew up with “Hey whatdyasay get laid get fucked” but when I moved to a different city at 13 that city had “Hey Motherfucker get laid get fucked.” ---
