You really need to get a copy of [_Life as We Do Not Know It_](https://books.google.com/books?id=anth6kuZStsC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false) by Peter Douglas Ward.

(For life as we _do_ know it, you couldn’t do much better than the books of Nick Lane, especially including [_The Vital Question_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vital_Question) and _Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution.)_
