Bird feeding

We get a Coopers Hawk, which kinda changes the meaning of “bird feeders”. But the Ravens drive him off, sadly.

I like the scrub jays, they are so feisty.

I think Our Raccoon War 3 is immortalized on the board here.

Nothing to do but remove them, if you can.

Remove them from under the house, etc- sure. But do NOT trap and release elsewhere. They usually die then.

Not exactly what we do. :scream:

I stick to a couple of suet feeders, the square cages, hanging from shepherd’s crook poles. I get sparrows, blue jays, catbirds, downy woodpeckers, grackles, rarely a cardinal, one or two little ground feeder types picking up fallen scraps, and of course squirrels.

Oh, my, yes, the squirrels are so acrobatic. There’s one who clings to the cage with its hind feet while it digs out a mouthful with its forepaws, then hangs straight down to eat, then curls back up to repeat the process. Must have amazing abs. I don’t mind them stealing the suet, it amuses me, especially when they get halfway up the metal pole and start sliding back down.

I used to put out seed feeders, too, but the waste that littered the ground underneath was so messy, I quit offering that.

We have a metal feeder and it’s on a shepherd’s hook with a squirrel baffle that largely works. Sometimes a young enterprising squirrel leaps off off the roof onto the top but mostly they’re content to eat what drops. In theory, we get cardinals, blue jays, flickers or some small woodpecker, house & gold finches, chickadees, etc but the reality is usually a crapton of garbage house sparrows. Lower level is squirrels, a chipmunk and around eight doves. Winter can be nice with a bunch of juncos sheltering in the yew bushes and coming out to bottom feed seeds in the snow.
