Probably the only reason that “bitch” is no longer considered gender specific is that it is now used against men to imply that they are effeminate. (Sort of like “Sissy” but meaner.) I can remember teachers saying things like “If you don’t behave, Robert, you will have to sit with the girls…” But I don’t mind it when my friends use it to tease. ---

Hmm…I use bitch as a gender neutral. I called my boyfriend a grumpy bitch yesterday actually. I would like to think that it was ment in the same terms that I refer to myself or my sisters being a grumpy bitch. (Specifically when one is in a mood whereby nothing will make them happy and one is determined to make it someone else’s fault/problem one is being a grumpy bitch.) So, while I’m sorry if you feel bitch is an insulting gender specific term, I think I’ll keep using it as a general purpose expression. I can be a bitch like that. ---

Years ago, at work, I was speaking with a group of people about one of our coworkers. The consensus was uncharitable, and although I did not share that opinion, I casually mentioned, “No doubt about it, she’s a hard headed pushy bitch.” The silence was stunning. I didn’t worry about it much. Sure enough a few days later, Tanya, (the bitch in question) came up to me and said, “Did you say I was a bitch?” I replied, with all of my wounded dignity on display, “Of course not! I said you were a hard headed pushy bitch.” She wasn’t offended. I happen to like hard headed pushy bitches. She knows that. But several of the less . . . profane minded of my coworkers never did understand why she was not horribly offended at my words, so dutifully repeated to her.
