# Black Men drinking White Wine

Recently at bars in NYC, I’ve noticed groups of 3 African American men drinking white wine. I’ve noticed this on at least 3 different occasions over the past month or so. Since I haven’t watched any movies or TV shows recently, I was wondering whether there was some pop culture reason. I remember that for a few months, the movie _Sideways_ caused a whole generation of white male yuppies to swirl their red wine glasses vigorously and annoyingly.

Don’t know about the US but in Australia the cheapest way to get pissed is to drink wine. Most other stuff works out a dollar per drink upwards. You can get wine for half that.

Asking the specific individuals who are drinking the wine might not yield the right answer. As Gladwell described in _The Tipping Point_, certain trends take hold simply by people noticing others doing them. So the groups themselves probably don’t know how the trend originated, just like most teenagers wearing Doc Maartens in the '90’s probably didn’t know their 'tipping point".
But I did ask the bartenders and they both noticed it too. One of them mentioned that there must be some pop culture reference, which brought about this thread. Similar to the _Sideways_ example I gave, she mentioned that they started selling out of bottles of Moscato after Drake mentioned it in the Trey Songz song “I Invented Sex”.

Didn’t you know that it is a well known fact that your so-called “black men” cannot metabolize white wine and it has a lethal dose at LD 50/50. Or was that MD 50/50?

I didn’t interpret the other stuff as racist, exactly, as pointing out that they think the OP is racist. I don’t know that the OP is trying to be racist but if he/she saw a group of white women or white men drinking white wine, would they think that was all that odd? Kind of doubt it…

The point is that there were _three_ of them drinking white wine. THREE, and they were drinking it in a _bar_! That has to have some kind of cultural significance.
He saw groups of 3 on 3 different occasions! :eek:

No, and that’s the POINT. Have we lined the path with eggshells so thoroughly that it’s “racist” to note that seeing groups of black guys sitting around drinking white wine is a bit unusual?

Well, make fun of the OP all you want, but I believe he may have a point. When I was a bartender, I would have thought it curious if three white guys walked in and ordered Hypnotiq.
Puff Daddy endorsed\* that particular spirit, and it was quite common for about 6 months to have a bevy of black females come in after work on Friday for some cocktails.
I will have to ask if any of my old colleagues have noticed this trend.
- He was right about “get you erotic”. Man, after a few Hypno martini’s those were some fun Friday happy hours!🆒
