:rolleyes: I think I figured out why I usually stick to the pit. I canā€™t call all the dumbasses in this thread dumbasses, so their dumbassery will just have to go uncommented. Hint: Iā€™m not talking about the OP, who has displayed no dumbassery as far as I can see. I think white wine is horrible and kind of weird. And I think itā€™s usually drunk by white women who are at least 40. If I kept seeing black guys drinking white wine, Iā€™d also think there was something that had recently popularized white wine with black men. ---

You go to your local dive or sports bar and order a wine, yeah, that may make you stick out like a sore thumb of youā€™re a college-aged male. You go to a nice more upscale bar or restaurant, not a big deal. When I was in my early 20s, there were a good number of bars we went to where ordering a wineā€“even whiteā€“would not elicit a reaction from my peers, although I will admit ordering a white probably will be judged as slightly ā€œgirlyā€ if you pressed them. And itā€™s not a big deal at all in a restaurant setting. ---

My band played a gig in a wine bar a couple of weekends ago. Musicians got FREE WINE. So you should be able to guess what we drank. Weā€™re all white Australian males, though. My black (African-Australian) friend (and former housemate) drinks plenty of wine, red or white. Iā€™d say wine is his drink of choice nowadays. ---

Okay, point taken. Although I _could_ have ordered wine with the IA guys, itā€™s not like I was drinking a pink, girly drink with a little paper umbrella sticking out, but Iā€™d probably need them to serve it to me in a filthy coffee mug to look a little less refined. But yeah, with the corporate types that I meet with for work or when Iā€™m at a high-falutinā€™ fundraiser, no one bats an eye if the man in the suit is drinking a glass of wine. ---

I drank wine in college ( also a lot of Guinness, but very little hard liquor ) as did many of my male friends and though our taste in wine was arguably a bit suspect, I donā€™t think our masculinity was. But maybe I was wrong :D. ---

So there is my anecdote which trumps everyones elses anecdote because my worldview is the only one that mattters and thus I am right. No, like I said it honestly befuddles me a bit, but like I also implied Iā€™m sure my upbringing has something to do with it. I was raised in a milieu of ā€œworking class intellectualsā€ ( pretty loosely defined ) and from my early teens at least in wine-centric California. The folks my parents interacted with were mostly blue collar workers, but many of whom happened to have college degrees or were otherwise self-educated in political theory ( my folks were Reds ). Boozing, and plenty of it, was mostly done at homes instead of at bars and auto-line after-shift chatter more often involved Trotsky than the 49ā€™ers. In such an effete atmosphere, no doubt I got my priorities out of wonk ;). ---

Okay, so Iā€™ve now posed this question to many others here in NY, and thereā€™s only one potential answer that can explain the admittedly statistically insignificant trend. Numerous other theories were tossed around but none passed the logic test. Some videos and movies were mentioned but none seemed popular enough to drive a shift in preference. None of my friends, besides the bartender, have noticed the trend. Last night, my friend thought I was probably mistakenly assuming it was wine and that the trend was probably that people were drinking normal mixed drinks out of wine glasses. Everyone, and I mean everyone, thought it was weird that 3 guys would be drinking white wine together in a bar, regardless of demographic. Iā€™m typically the first to notice trends, and in NY they come often. When I first notice what I think will be a trend, I quickly take note and start trying to find answers. Sometimes itā€™s just coincidence and this may be a strong possibility in this case. But it would be a very weird coincidence. Funny thing is that the bartender (who had mentioned that their bottles of Moskato started selling out after the Trey Songz song ā€œI Invented Sexā€ became popular) told me that Moskato is indeed white. That song was extremely popular and that might be the origin.
