Well, since I pride myself on being 99 percent honest, I guess I should admit that I just left a midtown bar and that many people around me were drinking white wine, much more than I would expect. The crowd, as usual, is mixed. So I asked my bartender, who I’ve known for a while (best friend of a former bootie call), on whether she has noticed an increase in white wine consumption at the bar. She said no. She’s black (which I mention only because that seems to be relevant to certain people here). So I asked her if she’s noticed what I’ve noticed recently. She said no and that white wine has always been popular with young black guys since the “white party fad” started, which I didn’t consider. These are parties which Diddy popularized in which all attendees are required to wear all white. And the theme inspired the obvious choice of wine Somehow she didn’t throw a hissyfit though. So I pulled up this thread on my blackberry and showed her meanoldlady’s posts. Her comment was “every race has people that are ‘old school embarrassing’”. Tru dat, I said. Incidentally, her colleague, who’s white, said that he has noticed much more white wine consumption in younger guys in general, white and black…but not other races. Take what you will from all this. ---

There’s been a lot of intellectual firepower expended here on a question that I don’t think really contained as much meaning as has been attributed to it. Here’s my take on the question: Over the last thirty years, I would say that I’ve gone to a bar an average of three nights a week (and what that says about me is best left to another thread). Sometimes more, sometimes less, but that’s about how it works out. Mostly that’s been in New York City, but I’ve been in most of the major cities (well, all of the major cities and many of the lesser cities) in the United States, and plenty of cities around the world. And that inclues a fair number of nights working behind a bar. More on the other side of the bar, but I’ve spent time as a bartender. Most of those nights have been spent in what I’d call hangout bars. Neighborhood places. Not nightclubs, not fancy places, no velvet ropes, no special cocktail menus (one place I used to frequent had a sign over the bar reading “pain-in-the-ass drinks $5 extra”), the kind of place where you’d probably get thrown out of you asked for, say, a lichee martini. I’ve never seen a group of three (or four, or five, or any number that would represent a typical group of buddies out for a drink) guys all order wine. Never. If I saw three guys come in and they all ordered wine, I’d notice. I might not really pay any attention to whether they were black or white or whatever, but I’d notice the wine order. And then, if I saw a group of guys come in on some other night, and they all ordered wine, I’d notice, and remember that I’d recently seen the same thing a few nights ago. And, yes, if those guys were black, then I might remember that the last group was black also (if that was the case). And then I might indeed think, hey, is there some drinking fashion or taste going on here that I don’t know about? There are ethnic tastes in food and drink. It’s pretty commonplace to see a group of black guys hanging out and drinking brandy (Hennessy or Courvoisier or something). I haven’t seen groups of white guys drinking that stuff. And I’ve never observed a bunch of young black guys drinking Jaegermeister, although I’ve seen plenty of young (always young – it’s not what I’d call a grownup drink) white guys drink that crap. And I’ve only seen girls (again, it’s a young thing) order Southern Comfort, or anything made with it. And so on. It ain’t racist. It’s just curious. ---

You sure they weren’ sippin’ on some [Alize’](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliz%C3%A9)? How do you know what they were drinking, exactly? Or did you automatically assume they were drinking White Wine as a White Person seeing a wine glass? Could have been spritzers for all you know. ---

I don’t necessarily agree, having a major sweet tooth myself, but that’s the underlying assumption. ---

Raiders QB Jamarcus Russel got busted with Purple Drank recently, another NFLer was busted and died before trial and a Packer starting lineman was busted in Houston recently.
