I think he would. The OP actually pointed out a similar phenomenon caused by Sideways amongst white yuppies. Asking why X has caught on amongst a particular demographic isn’t racist. There was a thread in GQ a few weeks ago asking why asians do the “two finger victory sign” in photos, there wasn’t a chorus of cries of racism then.
To me, drinking white wine just doesn’t seem that odd. I guess it’s because it’s pretty much my drink of choice. To me it’s like saying, “Isn’t it odd that all these college students are drinking beer?” Wine just seems like such a normal thing that asking about it seems bizarre.
Appologies. Fixed before the edit window closed, though. Now it is you who will look foolish, bwahahaha!!.
Did the board software just start nesting quotes? I think thats what screwed me up.
In a bar? Guess you go to classier places then I do, drinking wine of any color in a bar seems kinda weird. And if it was a particular demographic doing it in all instances, I think I’d make a note of it as well.
The real trouble was that they were out of Rocket Fuel, which discriminating black people know has the upstate prison flavor that keeps you ugly all night long. Remember, when the party starts bouncin’ and the ladies start bumpin’, tighten up your flow with Rocket Fuel.
I don’t drink in bars all that often these days but if I were, I’d probably order a glass of white wine if they had it. And I definitely have in the past. I don’t really think of it as classy, just that I prefer the taste of it to most liquor.
I suppose that from now on, I should all assume that all races, sexes and cultures all behave exactly the same as each other and are influenced by the same sources of pop culture. And I’m sure that if any of you saw a group of white women in business suits all drinking out of 40 oz. malt liquor bottles, none of you would have raised an eyebrow, huh?
If anything, the people suggesting racism are the ones displaying it. Why, you ask? Because they’re making the implicit assumption that white wine is a superior form of liquor (vs. malt liquor, Boone’s or Thunderbird). And thus they are offended by my suggestion that this is a new trend that must have some pop culture origin. What gives you all away is the list of beverages that you chose to highlight. The beverages that were mentioned were grape soda, Boone’s, malt liquor, Thunderbird, King Cobra and MD 20/20, none of which are actually served at bars. Anyone could have also mentioned Ciroc, Hennessy, Hypnotiq or Cristal (which are all served at bars).
Depends what kind of bar, but I’ve seen it many times.
Wine is my drink of choice, and I’m a man. I don’t think of it as an especially female drink.
I’m sure I’ve seen more than one black man drink wine in my life. Of course, I’m not in the US. Maybe African-Americans are a culture that doesn’t drink much wine in general, but that doesn’t mean that it’s especially unusual to see a group of them sharing a bottle of wine. Stereotypes may be based in reality, but they’re still stereotypes.
