> [Worlds Greatest Dad](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1262981/) - I regard this as Robin Williams finest. A fathers horrible son kills himself in a sex accident, and he ends up writing his suicide notes to make him loved.

I liked this one. It’s not just dark for dark’s sake, but it has a solid theme about how we process the loss of people in our lives who are not that great. I appreciated this because I lost a relative that was just kind of an asshole to everybody. He died a stupid, pointless death, and it makes the grieving process complicated. This movie gets it. And it’s funny.

IMO, the Coen brothers corner the market in white-hot black comedy, but my favorite will always be Kubrick’s, _Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb._ It doesn’t get much darker than poking fun at nuclear holocaust. And, it doesn’t get much funnier than the comedic genius of Peter Sellers, combined with the out-of-character, unexpectedly masterful comedic acting chops of George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden. Scott’s war room rant scene is a stellar high point, in film peppered with high points. I laugh, and cry, just thinking about it:

> To me, there’s been a drift on the question, and the context starts with the original mentioned film, Filth. It’s DARK, subject matter might offend. But it’s led to a bunch of offbeat comedies, or a bit dark stuff, which isn’t really the genre. I’ve seen most of those films, and they’d not make my list.

Hmm. I see your point.

I submit the movie _The Harder They Fall,_ and the limited series _Godless_.

_Godless_ in particular can be hard to watch, and it’s also exceptionally excellent.

Not on the comedy end, but that one is genuinely harsh watch. I suppose there’s another category to be had which could be “harsh but good dramas”, with a sub category of westerns.

Harshest watch I’ve had took me about three months to watch, I could only watch it in five minute chunks. [Irreversible](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/). It is designed to make you sick, the screen rocks and flips over, the soundtrack horrible. It’s filmed in chunks going backwards to a scene which causes it. Then the film ends with the nice life they had before the event.

In the genre of western bleak, I give you [The Townsman](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2398231/).

**Vulgar** is so dark I’m not sure if it’s funny.
