Well, Charley Pride is the first to mind of course, but for more contemporary artists you could take a look at [Cowboy Troy](http://www.cowboytroy.com/) who plays what he calls “hick hop.” ---

Ray Charles also has a country album, but it never \*felt \* country to me. He is, however, the subject of an exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Toward the end of the tour there is a section devoted specifically to black country artists. ---

[Troy Cassar-Daley](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_Cassar-Daley) , while possibly having the least “country” surname of any artist going around, has some very tuneful tunes and is an indigenous Australian. ---

[/QUOTE] 😕 Cowboy Troy… I like the spirit of what he’s doing but… Well, if you watch _College GameDay_ on ESPN you can hear him hick-hopping on the Big & Rich GameDay version of “Coming To Your City.” It even seems that we overlapped some as students at UT. In Johnny Cash’s autobiography he tells a hilarious story about Charley Pride. Cash met him when Pride was just starting out. Pride invited him to a show (like you would if you were a struggling artist and you met an idol). Johnny was high and didn’t make it to the show but knew what hotel Charley was staying at and showed up ridiculously late at night and woke him up. And what struggling artist isn’t going to invite an idol in? Cash describes being stoned out of his mind and playing all these songs for Charley and him replying “Gee that sounds great Mr. Cash…boy it sure is getting late isn’t it…” after every song. Cash also promised to get Charley on at the Grand Ole Opry even though he himself was banned. ---

(The late) Stoney Edwards and DeFord Bailey. Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown played with Roy Clark occasionally, although I don’t know that I’d consider his music “country.” ---
