Excellent! Step 1 to finding a solution is admitting you have a problem.

Now, I don’t doubt you are a generally pleasant sort of person; I do hope that by reading some of the reactions you’ve gotten, you might think it’s time to update your paradigms a bit. And I don’t mean it simply racially; you have spent a HUGE portion of this thread defending a specific timebound recollection you have a comic book hero. That’s not healthy.

No, seriously. How prisoners are treated in this country is a goddamn crime. But I’m not sure that’s an argument that “anyone [is] saying that racism and oppression are worse than in the 50s or before.” Your response appears entirely tangential to the comment to which you were responding.

Did you see the title of the article? And I see the sentiment all the time on Twitter.

I am in agreement BTW that black men do get railroaded by the criminal justice system, especially in the South. I believe strongly in the rights of the accused. But some of that same “woke” crowd also throws this principle out when it’s a man accused of sexual violence. It’s maddening.

So, you know _less than nothing_ about the influence of the Chinese court system on the Japanese one, believe Zen Buddhism is a native Japanese religion, and have no idea how Korean immigration sparked a revolution in Yamato-period Japanese culture?
Hardly surprising, but dude, “sui generis”? [Like](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_influence_on_Japanese_culture#Korean_influences_on_ancient_and_classical_Japan) [fuck](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_missions_to_Imperial_China#Adopting_Tang_models).

No _shit_, genius! That’s kind of **my whole point in mentioning it** , since the point was what would development be like _if a country wasn’t colonized_ but free to develop on its own terms.

You really _should_ take that test I mentioned. Not a high school one, one for adults who are showing evidence of not…keeping up, shall we say. Because you were having real trouble following the track of the debate, there.

Do you have a cite for an accused sexual harasser/assaulter being “railroaded by the criminal justice system” and this being supported by the “woke crowd”? If you’re just talking about liberals taking accusations very seriously, then that’s another thing that’s very different than what you’re saying.

Umm, who are you asking? 'cos you’re using “you” as though that person was being replied to, but k9bfriender’s post was a whole page ago.

And “still waiting” is rich coming from the shitstain who ignores anything against his “arguments” such as pointing out he can’t read the Wikipedia articles he himself cites, knows nothing about the origins of Japanese culture, or has no grasp of Khoisan history. I’m “still waiting” for you to post a coherent argument, but that’d just be wishful thinking.

It would only be a strawman if it were not exactly what happened, and if you were not defending it.

As they did commit genocide, relocation, and a host of other atrocities, and you are in fact defending them, then there is no straw to be had here.

Facts don’t matter to some people, as we see with accusations that there is a genocide in the U.S. of blacks being murdered by whites, even though blacks murder whites at a significantly higher rate than vice versa.

Now, that is an example of a strawman, where you construct an entirely hypothetical past, and then complain about the results that you expect.

As far as guns, sure, that was a tech that europe had pretty far ahead, they developed metals that they could build guns out of that fired reliably and not-explode-in-your-faceively, and so on a military front, they led the pack. As far as infrastructure and sanitation and trade and economy and immigration policies and social safety nets and everything else that makes a civilization, many of the african countries were ahead, and few were far behind.

It is always easier to destroy than to build, and Europe was better at destroying than the African nations were.

Hoo boy. This is exactly the kind of romanticization I was talking about. Never mind the stats Steven Pinker has recently been touting showing that violence in the modern West, even factoring in WWI and WWII, is far lower than in those supposedly peaceful primeval indigenous societies.

And Europe didn’t build, only destroyed? Sure, I suppose if you don’t include power plants and trains and seafaring ships and canals and bridges and tunnels and banking systems and universities and modern hospitals and skyscrapers and textiles and plastics and precision manufacturing and mass production and automobiles and airplanes; and as long as you don’t include anything else they have built in the past century.

Oh jeez. I’ve conceded that I should bow to the obviously far more encyclopedic knowledge base of others on this thread when it comes to Marvel comics continuity, or the lack thereof. But as you keep harping on this point, I will put the entirety of the Wikipedia section I linked to, on the “fictional history of Asgard(comics)”, in a spoiler box. Still doesn’t look like a science fiction origin story from where I sit (and if that’s inaccurate, as I said: change it!), but the curious reader may be the judge. That’s the last I will say on this particular tiresome subtopic. (Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to wipe off these flecks of spittle you sprayed on me from your enraged maw.)

According to Asgardian legend, in the beginning there was nothing, but in time two worlds came into being on opposite sides of the void. The one to the north was named Niflheim, a world of clouds and shadows in whose center surged the fountain Hvergelmir, from which flowed twelve rivers of ice. The one to the south was named Muspelheim, which teemed with rivers of fire. Eventually the warm air from the south carved out the frost giant Ymir from the ice in the north. Ymir became the father of all the giants, and his cow Auðumbla licked out of the ice the first Asgardian, Buri. Buri had a son named Borr, who married the giantess Bestla. Borr and Bestla had three sons named Odin, Vili, and Ve, who were known as the Æsir. Odin and his brothers grew to hate the giants and slew Ymir, and his blood formed a great sea. Odin and his brothers then raised Ymir’s body from the sea and created Midgard between Niflheim and Muspelheim. With Ymir’s bones they created mountains, and with his hair they created trees. They then raised Ymir’s skull upon four pillars to create the heavens. Within the skull contained sparks from Muspelheim, which became the sun, moon, and stars. When Midgard was complete, Odin and his brothers created a home for themselves above it called Asgard. Between the two worlds they stretched a rainbow bridge and called it Bifröst.[1]
Once a year Odin must undertake the Odinsleep to regain his strength. During this time Asgard is vulnerable to attack from its many enemies, most notably Odin’s adopted son, Loki. Loki first takes command of Asgard during the Odinsleep, using his right as the ‘son’ of Odin before Thor could claim it, but fled when Asgard was invaded by Mangog as he realized that this new foe was too powerful.[2] Loki later usurped the throne of Asgard by taking the Odinring, but fled again when Asgard was invaded by the fire demon, Surtur.[3]
The throne of Asgard later passes to Thor after Odin is killed in battle by Surtur, when the demon invades Earth.[4]
It was prophesied that Loki would lead Asgard’s enemies in a final conflict known as Ragnarök, which would lead to its destruction. This comes to pass when Loki obtains the forge that created Mjolnir and creates new uru hammers for his army. The entirety of Asgard and its inhabitants are destroyed in the resulting battle.[5]
After Ragnarök, Donald Blake awakens Thor from the “Void of Non-Existence”. Thor returns to Earth and rebuilds Asgard outside of Broxton, Oklahoma, purchasing the land with gold from the treasury. Thor then goes about restoring the Asgardians, who have been reborn in the bodies of mortal men and women.[6]
Asgard’s location on Earth makes the city a target during the Secret Invasion by the Skrulls led by a Super-Skrull named Godkiller, whose powers mimic Thundra, Titania, Volcana and Battleaxe. The aliens are repelled with help from Thor’s ally, Beta Ray Bill.[7]
When Thor is forced to abdicate the throne and is exiled for killing his grandfather Borr, who was brought from the past and driven mad by Loki, control of Asgard passes to Thor’s half-brother, Balder.[8]
Asgard is destroyed yet again after Norman Osborn seizes control of S.H.I.E.L.D. following the Secret Invasion as he seeks to expel Asgard from U.S. soil in an effort to consolidate power. Osborn leads the Dark Avengers in an invasion against Asgard known as the Siege. The invading forces are defeated with help from the reunited Avengers, although Asgard itself is toppled by the Sentry. Immediately following the Siege, Thor reerects Heimdall’s observatory atop Stark Tower as sign of solidarity with Midgard and appreciation for the Avengers’ aid.[9]
Thor restores Odin to the throne when the nine realms are invaded by “the World Eaters”.[10] However, after Thor and Odin’s long-forgotten brother, Cul, kill each other in battle during the Fear Itself event, Odin passes control of Asgard to the Vanir, headed by the “All-Mother”, a triumvirate of female deities consisting of Freyja, Gaea and Idunn.[11] Tony Stark’s company, Stark Resilient then rebuilds Asgard over Broxton, Oklahoma, where it is rechristened as “Asgardia”.[12]
During the Original Sin storyline, it is revealed that there is a Tenth Realm in Asgard called Heven that is inhabited by Angels. It was cut off from the rest of the realms following the Angels’ attack on Asgard which led to the apparent death of an infant Angela.[13]
Asgard later established the Congress of Worlds which consists of the representatives of the Nine Realms.[14] After Heven was reintegrated with the other Realms, representatives of Heven started appearing as members of the Congress of Worlds.[15]

I’ve noticed you have a penchant for hairsplitting. I’ve definitely seen my share of “things are worse than ever”, but “things are no better and show no sign of getting better” is bad enough.

Ta-Nehisi Coates, whom I dissed early in this thread, is a prominent example of a disseminator of this kind of viewpoint. Jon Chait, one of my very favorite columnists, called him on it in 2014. [Barack Obama vs. the Culture of Poverty](http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/03/barack-obama-vs-the-culture-of-poverty.html)

Chait first quotes TNC:

> [@](#):
>
> America has rarely been our ally. Very often it has been our nemesis. …
> I view white supremacy as one of the central organizing forces in American life, whose vestiges and practices afflicted black people in the past, continue to afflict black people today, and will likely afflict black people until this country passes into the dust.

Chait then responds:

> [@](#):
>
> I have never previously detected this level of pessimism in Coates’s thinking before. It is also deeply at odds with the hard evidence. It is hard to explain how the United States has progressed from chattel slavery to emancipation to the end of lynching to the end of legal segregation to electing an African-American president if America has “rarely” been the ally of African-Americans and “often” its nemesis. It is one thing to notice the persistence of racism, quite another to interpret the history of black America as mainly one of continuity rather than mainly one of progress.
>
> As Noah Smith points out, since the abolition of de jure segregation, most social metrics relevant to black prosperity have turned sharply upward. The achievement gap has shrunk, the black poverty rate has fallen, the rates at which African-Americans are victims of homicide has collapsed, while the proportion of black police officers has exploded.
>
> This is also Barack Obama’s story about America. Unlike the tea party story, it does not imagine a union born of perfection and corrupted over time. It instead it describes a country whose soaring ideals sat uncomfortably aside an often cruel reality, but which — fitfully, slowly, as-yet-imperfectly, but inexorably — has bent the latter into closer conformity with the former. It is not surprising that black and Hispanic Americans report higher levels of optimism regarding the future than white Americans.

That last point is key. The sharply differing results you get on “right track” poll numbers between whites and nonwhites is the best evidence of all as to how Obama is right to endorse MLK’s narrative of the arc of history being long, but bending toward justice.

> [@iiandyiiii](#):

> Do you have a cite for an accused sexual harasser/assaulter being “railroaded by the criminal justice system” and this being supported by the “woke crowd”?

There it is: more hairsplitting. What I’m talking about is how that “crowd” throws a fit every time they hear about an acquittal of an accused rapist, or a prosecutor deciding not to prosecute someone who has been accused of rape. The presumption of innocence just does not register with this “crowd”. Do I really need to find a cite for you on this? What will you give me if I find five cites from Twitter? I find it a bit annoying to be assigned busywork for something we all know is true.

Speaking of that “woke crowd”, I was also annoyed by the way they pilloried Rahm Emanuel for using the phrase “fucking retards” as a term of abuse. (I thought it was a pretty funny remark.). So I’m glad to see Mr. Dibble has shaken off those strictures and feels free to use an armchair-psychiatrist diagnosis of early-onset dementia in a similar manner. Thus I don’t have to feel any compunctions against saying he comes across as unhinged, a total loon. I’m glad he’s not my neighbor, or he’d probably be ranting against me for failing to keep my kids quiet, or some technical violation of the building protocol like having the wrong type of chairs on my balcony or leaving Christmas lights out three days past the deadline for their removal. And then I’d have to worry about the flecks of spittle for real! 😃

I don’t see how those necessarily conflict. I’m an optimist and I generally agree with Coates. I think it’s likely white supremacism will be with us for a long, long time. That doesn’t mean we can’t continue to work to make it less powerful.

I don’t see what, necessarily, being angry about an acquittal or a lack of prosecution has to do with presumption of innocence. Perhaps if I believed that our justice system was largely free of bias against rape/sex-assault victims and against non-white people I’d agree with you, but I don’t believe this. I believe in the presumption of innocence, and I believe that in many cases our justice system fails rape/sex-assault victims to the benefit of rapists and sexual assaulters.

So you think the people I’m talking about start with a presumption of innocence for accused rapists? Oh my, that’s a good one.

BTW, I think you were trying to use the “i’s” as sort of a pictorial backdrop for the name “andy”, but every single time I read one of your posts, it reads to me as “eye-eye-andy-eye-eye-eye-eye”, like I actually hear those sounds in my head. Just FYI.

As a legal principle? Certainly. I don’t see what the conflict is.

Mmmhmm. I’m sure you don’t. :dubious:

Anyhoo…I really need to start studying for the SAT. I will see you MFers on the other side, maybe Saturday afternoon or evening. Until then, peace out!

You _do_ see how what you just wrote there is the **strawman version** of “Europe was better at destroying than other regions were”, right?

Just shut the fuck up,
think for a minute, then address the actual examples of “science fictiony” language I quoted, please.

_Yawn!_ Characterising your opponent as irrationally angry is last decade’s trollery tactic, idiot. Like I said earlier, this is _fun_ for me. Not because you’re angering me,
but because you’re so stufefyingly dumb yet so lacking in self awareness, it’s like some carnie sideshow: The Reason-Defying D-K Man!
