> Blade Runner 2099 is an upcoming American sci-fi television miniseries created by Silka Luisa for Amazon Prime Video. It is an installment in the Blade Runner franchise, serving as a sequel to the films Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017). The franchise is based on Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. In November 2021, Ridley Scott, who had directed Blade Runner, announced that a pilot for the franchise's television spin-off had been written along with ...

Why do they still have blade runners if replicants are in power?

Logically, they would be “retiring” humans…

They retire rogue replicants-

> In 2099 Los Angeles, following a Replicant uprising, Replicants are the power brokers in the city while humans have become second-class citizens. Olwen, a Replicant Blade Runner, is nearing the end of her life. She unites with her partner Cora, a human pretending to be a Replicant, to hunt down a gang of rogue Replicants.[[2]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blade_Runner_2099#cite_note-Kleinman_2026-2)

I disagree strongly with Ridley Scott- Dekcard is NOT a replicant. Making him one ruins the whole film- which is the replicants are just as human as he is. But that’s just my opinion. I likely will skip this.

> **[Rick Deckard](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Deckard)**
>
> Richard Deckard is a character and the main protagonist of Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Harrison Ford portrayed the character in the 1982 film adaptation, Blade Runner, and reprised his role in the 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049. James Purefoy voiced the character in the 2014 BBC Radio 4 adaptation. Rick Deckard is a bounty hunter who becomes a specialist plainclothes police officer with the San Francisco Police Department in the early 21st century, responsibl...

> Philip K. Dick wrote the character Deckard as a human in the original novel in order to explore the increasing similarity of humans and replicants;[[11]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Deckard#cite_note-Themes_in_Blade_Runner_devo-11) for example, the book states explicitly that Deckard passed the Voight-Kampff test. Screenwriter [Hampton Fancher](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hampton_Fancher "Hampton Fancher") has said that he wrote the character as a human, but wanted the film to suggest the possibility that he may be a replicant. When asked, “Is Deckard a replicant?”, Fancher replied, “No. It wasn’t like I had a tricky idea about Deckard that way.”[[7]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Deckard#cite_note-Themes_in_Blade_Runner_:2-7) During a discussion panel with Scott to discuss _Blade Runner: The Final Cut_, Fancher again stated that he believes Deckard is human (Scott’s “idea is too complex”[[12]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Deckard#cite_note-12)), but also repeated that he prefers the film to remain ambiguous.[[13]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Deckard#cite_note-13)
>
> Harrison Ford had stated over the years that he considered Deckard to be human. “That was the main area of contention between Ridley and myself at the time,” Ford told an interviewer

Not a very high standard:

> “Sushi. That’s what my ex-wife called me…”

Point is, [at a certain cyberpunk level] it does not matter… (even if there is a larger point to be made)

Which is completely consistent with what the synopsis seems to be saying: the _replicant_ Blade Runner teams up with a _human_ Blade Runner to hunt some replicants (or “replicants”…)

Looks like big puffy jackets are the hip fashion trend in 2099. Lucky for me, I should be dead by then.
