Leaffan, can’t you just accept that different people find different things to be funny? There’s really no point in us trying to explain why it’s funny to you. You undoubtedly find things to be funny that some of us don’t, and I don’t think you could explain why to us either.
My favorite line from the song.
If they were looking for the least vulgar song from the movie, I’m not sure why they didn’t go with “What Would Brian Boitano Do?” rather than “Blame Canada.”
In the latter, even if you bleep out the ‘fuck,’ you’ve got “now when I see him he tells me to (bleep) myself,” and omitting the ‘fuck’ doesn’t exactly lessen the vulgarity of the expression.
In “WWBBD?” you’ve got one line where “Brian Boitano doesn’t take shit from anybody” and that’s about it, the “I’m sure he’d kick an ass or two” bothers you, but people haven’t bleeped ‘ass’ on the radio in eons.
Not to mention, “WWBBD?” is a really fun song.
It was a movie they shouldn’t have seen in the first place. It was rated R, intended for adults, adults who saw it thought it was crap, and the kids BSed their way in because their parents weren’t being vigilant enough. Then, after the damage was done, instead of saying “Oops, we goofed, but let’s do what we can, and explain to the kids why they shouldn’t emulate this movie,” they blamed Canada. They don’t blame the theater that failed to exercise vigilance, and let the kids in (IIRC, they paid a vagrant to be their “guardian”); they don’t blame the US distributor of the film; they don’t blame the MPAA for not giving it an X rating, so kids couldn’t get in even with an adult; they don’t blame the filmmakers, or T&P themselves. They blame Canada.
Of course I can accept that other people find things funny that I don’t and vice versa. I asked because, out of context, it’s not a funny song. Given some context, I get it. Thank you.
I was coming here to post that from YouTube!
Cause that’s what Brian Boitano’d do!
At the company where I work, most of our corporate management is based in Canada. So whenever something gets fucked up we start playing the Blame Canada song.
Sorry. I won’t ever start any more threads.
The song exemplifies typical arrogant American blame-shifting and unwillingness to take responsibility for our actions. That’s what you Canadians say behind our backs, isn’t it?
Well, isn’t it??
No. Well, the arrogant part at times, perhaps.
I’ll happily say it to your face, Yank. Genteel politeness only goes so far.
I’d have to agree “What Would Brian Boitano Do?” is the better song in a lot of respects.
However, in terms of determining which should have been Oscar nominated, I think it’s worth noting “Blame Canada!” actually contributes to the narrative of the movie; it imparts the intent and motives of the characters. “What Would Brian Boitano Do?” is a good song but it’s kind of a one-off joke by comparison.
I’m not saying the Academy follows that idea all the time, necessarily, but to my mind it’s one they should and so in this case they made the right choice.
I could swear the line was originally " 'Cause Brian Boitano don’t take shit from any-fuck-ing-oooonnnnnne!" but it isn’t on the DVD that way.
At least in this thread, you started off on a really bad foot if you didn’t want to get some flack.
“I don’t understand what makes ‘Blame Canada’ from South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut funny (as by itself, it seems more random and mean than anything else) and I don’t have the time/inclination/access to media to view it within the context of the movie. Can someone give me a short synopsis of the plot and how the song relates?”
would have been a much less antagonistic way to get what you wanted.
And the near-unanimous answer would have been “Just watch the movie”.
Thank you for your report on this thread from Universe 37-B.
A typically shifty Canadian tactic, trying to get me to call you a liar.
Ouch.
I don’t know what your problem is with me, or why you needed to point to other threads I started: one going back to 2011. If I bother you that much then take me to the pit. Otherwise you’re threadshitting on me in here.
I’m not sure what your problem with Leaffan is, but if it’s the fact that he doesn’t like some forms of entertainment, Cafe Society may not be the right forum for you. Knock it off or take it to the Pit. And Leaffan, if you object to what someone else is posting, please just report it and don’t reply.
That and Canada was, up until the time they foisted Mayor Rob Ford on the world, viewed as totally and completely without harm, malice or blame. Blaming Canada is idiotic and wrong.
