So, yesterday I was channel surfing and happened upon **Blazing Saddles** on Country Music Television. Realizing that they are a little over the top with their censorship, I watched for a while, after all it is one of my favorite movies. Every instance of the word “nigger” was bleeped. It was insane. In it’s own way it was funny. ---

Yeah, the edited-for-TV version of BS was made a long time ago – most of the stuff that was cut out appears all the time on regular TV now (not the n-word, though). I’m thinking of the campfire scene with all the farting dubbed over with horse whinneys. ---

You know I swear that the version that played on my local TV station in the early 80s didn’t edit out “nigger”. I’ve seen the word occasionally used on episodes of “Sanford and Son” and “All In The Family”, so maybe it wasn’t as verboten as it would be today. The funniest edit of the movie I’ve seen is the Comedy Central version. There’s a scence where Hedley Lamarr is planning to snatch the townsfolk’s land and looks up “land” in a law book. The book says “Land. See Snatch”. Yeah I know it’s a double entendre but it also works in the context of the line. So why edit “snatch” out? ---

The edited-for-TV version that’s been shown since the 1980s replaced the fart noises with horse sounds, so if this one had the fart noises left in then it’s a new edit. ---

Because apparently the objective when editing Mel Brooks movies for TV is not so much to censor the dirty words, but remove all the punchlines to the jokes. It’s merely coincidental that dirty words and punchlines overlap nearly 100% in Mel Brooks movies. 😛 ---

It wasn’t in Houston well into the late 90s, I remember being shocked when it started. I remember plenty of movies and old shows where nigger was unbleeped, iwhat about All In The Family(god what do they do to that show on TV reruns now?!). Apparently some cable channels are now even bleeping faggot, fag, fairy, etc which in a strange way changes the whole context of the scene. Now instead of understanding the insult you think the guy said fuck or something.😕 ---

Of course, bleeping out all instances of “nigger” in _Blazing Saddles_ completely misses the point. It’s not a racist movie; it’s a movie _about_ racism. Blunt the racism, and you also blunt the underlying message speaking out against the racism. ---

The best part was bleeping out “Schtupp” when they are standing right in front a huge poster with the name in big letters. :smack:
