Watching Endeavour from the beginning with my phone handy for translation, and Mrs. Thursday told Fred his lunch was bloater paste sandwiches. I looked it up. ---

No but I’ve enjoyed tubed anchovy paste, sprat pate, salmon spread, taramasalata. I’d probably like bloater paste just fine. ---

That yuckylicious site reminds me a little of James Lileks’ **[Gallery of Regrettable Food](https://www.lileks.com/institute/gallery/)**. All the entries are wonderfully disgusting, but I recommend starting with “Eww La La: French Cuisine”. Anyone who thinks French cuisine is necessarily elegant and tasty is in for a treat, in the same sense as a great horror movie is a “treat”! 😉 ---

I’ve got a small container of Gentleman’s Relish (spiced anchovy paste + butter) in my fridge, and that stuff goes great thinly smeared on buttered toast. I can’t imagine putting enough of it on something to constitute a sandwich, though. ---

I love kippers— sounds like bloater paste is just kippers in paste form. Somebody needs to hire a Marketing firm to come up with a new name, though. Ah, who am I kidding. This is a country that has spotted dick and bangers & mash. Brits love their silly, unappetizing food names.
