Hi. So, if I’ve got this right: You’re O neg your dad is A pos Your mom received AB neg/pos blood products. Is this correct? If so, what blood products did your mom receive? AB plasma is the universal donor and can be given to anyone, whereas AB packed red blood cells (pRBC) can only be given to AB patients. So either: 1. your mom received AB plasma/platelets/cryoprecipitate - this can be given to any blood type 2. You’re mistaken as to your blood type - an AB parent can’t have an O child, as A and B are dominant genes and O is recessive. Everybody has 2 genes that control blood type - selected from a combination of A, B, and o. Because A and B are dominant, that means that both (A/A) or (A/o) are type A. An AB person has genes (A/B). Type O people must have (o/o). This means the child of an AB parent MUST have either blood type B or A. 3. Your mom is not your mom, assuming that she’s AB and you’re O. ---

[there is no doubt in our family, sister, brother father and I are all ABneg with the same fenotype … mom is Oneg. My brother and I look like all our other cousin pairs. We joke about cloning. There is a picture of my cousin Lori and I at the age of 6 at Christmas, wearing identical little red and white dresses opening up presents. It looks like a pair of twins.] ---

Well, if an AB person pairs up with another AB the child could be AA, BB or AB. But the rest is correct. I think that A/B/O blood type is irrelevant in any plasma transfusion. It’s very important for either packed red blood or whole blood. Type O negative is the universal donor; type AB positive is the universal recipient.
