I would argue your premise. Many white collar jobs have overtime. The difference is that they are exempt jobs so it is extra work for no extra pay.
I’m talking about overtime hours and opportunities for employees who earn OT pay after 40 hours, when compared to salaried employees who don’t earn OT pay…
And in response to everyone else’s replies, it does make sense for companies to mandate and offer OT for their current employees instead of hiring new employees. I think most employees don’t mind working more during the busier season when compared to the slower seasons…
Furthermore, since I recently got hired at a grocery warehouse, I’m currently a temp (warehouse extra) associate, until I get hired on as a regular associate into our union, which may take a while, according to what my employers have told me, even though I still get full time hours and benefits/insurance after 60 days from my start date…
I also found out that our group of warehouse extra associates all work 2nd shift, which is from 2 pm - 10 pm, unless if our manager asks any of us to come in earlier at 12 pm or stay later past 10 pm for mandatory OT, even though we’re only allowed to work a maximum of 12 hours per day (overtime is voluntary for regular associates who are apart of the union)
My current schedule is also Friday thru Tuesday, which has its pros and cons, but at least it’s easier for me to schedule various appointments during my off days (if needed) since certain businesses are closed during the weekends…
That’s a dog collar job.
I was thinking food & bev service folks: waitstaff and caterers, bartenders, hosts.
Nope, roughnecks.
My assumption was that “black collar” jobs were the shit jobs that in e.g. the 1960s only African Americans would do, or be hired for. Much like “pink collar” jobs were/are “women’s work” no self-respecting white man would do, and especially not at those wages, “black collar” jobs were/are similar work unfit for whites.
I am gratified to learn that my intuition was wrong. Maybe, just maybe, our country is making progress on winding down those disgraceful discriminatory practices.
