WordMan did mention her and I gotta agree with him. Love Janis but that doesn’t sound like soul to me. I will put her on my “I can feel this song down in my soul” list though.

I think I watched this movie on VHS a long time ago and thought man, Dublin really likes their soul on speed. [I like the Talking Head’s version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ar2VHW1i2w) better even though it certainly isn’t soul. I think I’ll add The Commitments [Mr. Pitiful](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob2TsJHf3ic) to the list instead.

If you can listen to Janis sing"Cry" and say it’s not soul then you have a very different idea of soul than I do.

Van Morrison and Tom Waits skate that bluesy line. Did you know there is a genre called Soul Blues? I didn’t either until I did a google search with those two words together. [Robert Cray is the example](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra2Qndv_xeE&index=14&list=PLC1D15BE3AF6EFD3D)
Digging deeper into this genre, I think I’ll add [Paul DeLay’s Nice and Strong](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dk6H8dIWoJU) to the list, only because I really like this song.

Thanks, Teeming Millions.

On the list! Gotta pick one though. Arbitrary rule of the list is only one song per act. In both these cases it comes down to personal taste. I’m a Man and, um. . . coin toss-- The Letter is on the list!

I’ve Got Nothing To Lose almost lost a spot on the list being associated with that country song by Delbert McClinton trying to pass.

I wanted to suggest [Tracy Nelson](http://www.discogs.com/Tracy-Nelson-Sweet-Soul-Music/release/3020720), who walked that line between soul and blues, but as you can see from the linked album cover (_Sweet Soul Music_), her eyes were (are?) definitely brown.

That’s quite soulful (IMHO), but now we’re getting into a pop-ier territory that would include acts like Christopher Cross, and from there it’s a short hop to Crowded House and the like…Ya gotta draw the line somewhere.

Both on the list! Always loved Expressway To Your Heart and until this moment didn’t know they weren’t black. Never heard of Flaming Embers and I’d like to know why. Why have I never heard of them?

> Lonnie Mack is a pioneer of rock guitar who had a hit with an instrumental version of Chuck Berry’s _Memphis_ in the early 60s. Another instrumental, _Wham_ (an original tune by Mack) was also a hit. He was a major influence on Duane Allman, Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughan among others. So why am I mentioning a guitar player in a thread about blue-eyed soul? Because the man could _sing_.

Lonnie is a straight up bluesman. Not hearing much soul music here.
