Very sad news. He was the gold standard for enforcers when I was young; almost every fighter from the late 80s/early 90s has said that their toughest fights were against Probert. He could play some legitimately good hockey too; 29 goals in 87-88 and 20 in 1991-92. He was probably the second most popular Red Wing of that era after Yzerman. It’s a shame he wasn’t around for the end of the Cup drought. RIP Probie. ---

A sad day. Probert was a great thug, and he had some epic battles with Tie Domi. 45 is a pretty early age to go via heart attack, especially for a professional athlete. I hadn’t heard he was still doing cocaine. I’m not a big fan of thuggery, but since the NHL still has it, you might as well have one of the best. ---

He was reportedly clean from drugs and alcohol for years, but yes, like you say, that sort of stuff is cumulative in your system. Still, he was a pro athlete, I wouldn’t be shocked if he didn’t have some sort of defect. ---
