Lingering controversy over school-modernization money and a scaled-back tax break for businesses forced a delay in final votes on the legislation. But by nightfall, with Democratic leaders eager for final passage by the weekend, all issues were reported settled.

The GOP keeps having this problem–a name emerges as the “Saviour of the Party”, the name gets built up by the talking heads and the editorial writers, but when the public finally gets a look at said Messiah you can almost hear that sound effect they play when you lose on _The Price is Right_.

See also: Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson. Sarah Palin somehow still remains plausible as a party leader, which is one reason why I drink, but I think most people realize she isn’t going to lead the GOP back to sanity.

With Jindal’s epic fail, I wonder who the next GOP Messiah will be? My money is on Eric Cantor–ironic, since he’s Jewish.

I am using my head. How many ‘shovel ready’ high speed train projects are there? Maybe 3? A half dozen maybe in the wings?

The LALV has been a pet project for Harry Reids for a _long_ time. It isn’t that hard to deduce that he will push for a bunch of the money to go for that project. None of the other projects have such a highly placed champion.

Of course there isn’t specific language for that project in the bill. I don’t think there’s specific language for any project anywhere in the bill.

Lets turn the tables around. In some alternate universe, McCain/Palin wins the election, and Ted Stevens becomes the Senate Leader. They write and pass a stimulus bill that sets aside $8 billion for building bridges. Would it be that far out to assume that Ted probably wants a piece of that action for his Gravina Island pet project?

I find it odd that the GOP picks these “saviors” rather than letting the people choose the voice that resonates for them. I can’t think of any Rs I know that would have pinned their hopes on Jindal.

**Sinaijon** ,

It would be easy to not lie or mislead on this point. Just say that, in your opinion, the bill’s money will likely go to a specific misguided light rail project. Fine. No one objects to that opinion.

What we object to is the lie that the bill includes that earmark, or the misleading statement that the bill funds projects “such as” that.

If I say that the bill includes funding for basic scientific research such as psychological study of the reasons why many Republicans brazenly mislead the American public, would my statement be true and not misleading?

So is the GOP objection on the train connecting Las Vegas to Disneyland? Or on a train connecting Las Vegas and Los Angeles?

Connecting Las Vegas and Los Angeles seems sensible to me.
Connecting Las Vegas and Disneyland seems incongruent to me, but I will also believe the the GOP tossed in “Disneyland” to make the spending seem superfluous.

Your quote means nothing. There is still no such provision _in the bill_. The exact light rail projects are to be determined later. The bill does NOT set aside money for the Disney rail. Jindal made that up. The fact that the Republicans are forced to keep making things up to prove how “larded” the bill is is testament to how lean it really is.

It’s very sad that your party has decided to put all its chips on hoping for the economy to go tits up. It’s like refusing to help throw buckets of water on a house fire so you can blame the people throwing the water for the house burning down.

What are you talking about, for one thing? High speed rail and light rail are two separate things. If you try to go fast on light rail it will snap apart.

Light rail generally is delineated as commuting lines serving a hub, though they do have other functions. High speed rail operates at far higher speed over far longer distances.

That’s exactly the thing about Bobby Jindal. He’s a pretty smart guy. That slow, dopey performance last night was not a reflection of his own intellect, but of how he sees the voters – especially Republican voters. It’s been my impression for years that Jindal dumbs his act down to a crawl and puts on the cornpone and Jaysus costume not because it’s who he really is, but it’s who he thinks the voters of of his state are (and he’s not far wrong, I’m originally from that state and know something about it). He’s like a used car salesman working the rubes, but someone needs to tell him the whole country isn’t like Lousiana.

Levitating trainins and the facts:

> [@](#):
>
> Levitating Trains
> A number of congressional Republicans, including Reps. Patrick McHenry (N.C.), Thaddeus McCotter (Mich.), Candice Miller (Mich.), and Sens. John McCain (Ariz.) and Jim DeMint (S.C.), have accused Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, of inserting an $8 billion “earmark” into the stimulus bill for a levitating train from Disneyland to Las Vegas. That’s a major distortion. No money is specifically set aside for such a train.
>
> What the bill contains is $8 billion in funding for unspecified high speed rail projects (skip to p. 237 for the relevant section). The money is to be allocated by the secretary of transportation. A DOT spokesperson told us that it is “premature to speculate” about what exactly will be funded. Even vigilant pork-busting budget watchdogs agree that the “levitating train earmark” charge is without merit: Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan group that scours legislation for earmarks, told us that there is “no way that this provision is an earmark for Sen. Reid.”
>
> In truth, “levitating” trains really do exist – but they are properly called maglev trains, and they are high-tech marvels. The technology uses electromagnets to lift the train off the tracks. That reduces friction and allows trains to reach extremely high speeds; in 2003, an experimental Japanese maglev train reached a record speed of 581 kilometers (or about 361 miles) per hour.
>
> [snip]
>
> Officials in both Nevada and California, including California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons (both Republicans) have agreed to back a maglev train between Anaheim (home of Disneyland) and Las Vegas. In June 2008, Reid did help to secure $45 million for an environmental study of the proposed route.
>
> It’s possible the Anaheim-Las Vegas project will receive some of the stimulus funds, though how much remains uncertain. It’s not even clear how much Reid expects will go to it. On Feb. 12, the Associated Press reported that a statement from Reid’s office bragged that the Anaheim-Las Vegas project could receive what AP called “a big chunk of the money.” But The Washington Post later quoted a Reid spokesman as saying that while the project is “eligible" for funding, the transportation secretary, Ray LaHood – a former Republican congressman – “will have complete flexibility as to which program he uses to allocate the funds.” We asked Reid’s office to explain the discrepancy – “big chunk” or merely “eligible” – but we received no response.
>
> In any case, the weaker statement is more in line with the actual text of the legislation:
>
> American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009: Within 60 days of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall submit to the House and Senate Committees on Appropriations a strategic plan that describes how the Secretary will use the funding provided under this heading to improve and deploy high speed passenger rail systems.
>
> Is this pork? Taxpayers for Common Sense’s Ehrich Zimmermann told us: “Nothing about the bill indicates that maglev has a higher priority than other types of high speed rail.” That is the DOT’s view as well. A spokesperson for the DOT told us: “The Secretary of Transportation is developing a comprehensive plan over the next 60 days to ensure the allocated high-speed rail funds are spent on projects that will have the highest-impact across the country.”
>
> The L.A.-to-Vegas project may well be under consideration for funding; according to a FAQ posted on the Federal Railroad Administration’s Web site, maglev projects are eligible for funding under ARRA. But that same FAQ also points to a 2005 Railroad Administration report to Congress that found that outside of the heavily populated northeast corridor (roughly D.C. through Boston) and a 527-mile section along California’s coast, maglev’s costs exceeded its benefits. That implies that the proposed Disneyland-to-Las Vegas route doesn’t make economic sense to the FRA.

The stimulus program is largely a collection of state and local projects that need to be done ,and doing them will assist the economy and provide employment. That is practically by definition pork . Take out the pork and the bill is just a tax break bill. The argument is ridiculous. We are having a huge pork bill to stimulate the economy. The response that it is bad because it is full of pork is inane.
