Bomb the Fuckers!

Exactly!
Maybe.

I’m just kinda confused… I assume that the first statement was a whoosh, and that Duffer was… well, I don’t understand what he was doing.

Having viewed that thing more fully, because earlier I quit in the middle the first time…

Uh, guys? The crawl was full of jokes, and the network was “CNNN.” Is anyone sure the stupid people are real, or that the footage is used in context?

The clips have been all over the civilised world and France. I’m sure it’s not hard to find a few fools in any place, but these were so way out there my initial thought was some of them were actors.

I’m guessing you’d be wrong about Australians not knowing anything about Turkey.

This is why they don’t let W near a map with a pointer when he speaks.

I hate OPs where you have to click a link to find out WTF the thread is about.

Since I didn’t click it, that’s all I have to say.

Yeah, bad example. I grew up in Australia, and i could point out Turkey on a map from a pretty young age. Gallipoli is one of Australia’s most enduring historical and cultural memories.

Also, on a more general level, it’s sort of understandable to get countries mixed up when there are a whole lot of them together. For example, if someone got Iraq and Afghanistan nixed up on a map, it wouldn’t be too surprising. They are very close together, and are in the same part of the world.

But Australia’s one big fucking island sitting out there all alone in the middle of nowhere. I just don’t see how you could mix it up with Iran or France. Hell, even if they didn’t know the exact country name, i don’t understand how anyone could believe that the huge island in the South Pacific is part of Europe or the Middle East

I disagree.

We’ll save Australia; don’t wanna hurt no kangaroo. We’ll build an all-American amusement park there; they’ve got surfing, too.

As for everyone else, they all hate us anyhow, so let’s drop the big one now.

Ooooh, Randy!

This was obviously some sort of “Daily Show” program. People want to a) be on TV and b) be polite to people with cute accents. I always lie to pollsters and such, and I’m sure those Americans were just being funny.

The clip was from a show here called “CNNNN” and was a real-life vox pop. The show was a spinoff from a paper called “The Chaser”, which was, I suppose, like The Onion, but the on-the-street bits weren’t staged.

You have to love the scrolling headlines at the bottom of the screen. They made it hard to watch The Chaser. You needed to tape it to read later.

Here is their website.

Nah, his minders just try to keep him away from pointy things in general.

Look, if I saw an Aussie with a camera point to Australia labelled “North Korea”, first I’d go  and then I’d play along. Maybe he’d give me some magic kangaroo gold or something at the end. I’d assume he knew that I knew it was Australia.

If there were any doubts, the average insular American, once again shows how out of touch they are with reality. Never mind geography – truly a foreign concept.

Is it any wonder they are so easy to manipulate?

Not any more.

A very close friend of mine was doing a stint in Oregon as a Minister (of religion) a few years ago, and was giving a lecture or summat in Portland to a group of Esteemed Citizens. One local businessman came up to him after the talk, and asked him how long it had taken to drive to Portland…from Australia.

You should have said, “Three months, but we had to come to the surface a lot to refill the SCUBA tanks.”

Weren’t the people placing the country’s name on the map themselves?

The British don’t hate you. We just think you’re quaint and vaguely amusing.

OK, I see the comedy is derived from American’s “well known” ignorance of geography, and while my knowledge of geography is rather extensive, I realize most of my neighbors probably couldn’t place all of the US States on a map, let alone countries as far away as Iran and North Korea.

But these people were all obviously tourists in Australia. So I’m pretty sure they were all “in” on the joke to begin with.

Still, it’s kinda funny. But my question is … why is this in the Pit?
