Steven Jay Gould has a short essay in one of his books (Bully for Brontosaurus, maybe?) that addresses the question of nipples (for all male mammals, not just humans)…can’t remember his conclusion, but I remember that (a) it was a fun article, worth seeking out, and (b) it was quite awhile ago (precisely why I don’t remember it very well), hence predates this new book that y’all are discussing.

I remember years ago Martin Mull asked and answered that question in a stand-up comedy routine:

_Why do men have nipples?  
To help them find their cigarettes!_

Ok, maybe it’s a dumb joke but it still makes me giggle.
