Grapes of Wrath- Man gets out of prison. Discovers his home to be a dry wasteland and all the people moving/being pushed off the land by banks. Goes with family to California. Finds a bunch of other people in the same boat. Rich people own everything, working man being kept down. The end.
You forgot to mention that he gets to second base with a married woman on the last page.
How about “The Marble Faun” by Hawthorne? I’ve tried, really I have. I suspect there is some kind of creepy murder mystery, but I can’t get more than 20 pages in.
