Both www.playgroundlaw.com and www.tv.cream.org have books out. A different example is Geoff Ryman’s book 253 which started out as a web novel (and is a more logical read that way). It can still be found at http://www.ryman-novel.com/ but I’m not sure how complete it is.
The Mathworld site spawned the CRC Concise Encyclopedia of Mathematics (along with a drawn-out copyright battle over whether the original material could be made available online.)
Things My Girlfriend And I Have Argued About is a “work of fiction loooooooooosely ‘inspired’ by the Things page”.
I haven’t read his books yet, but the page was hilarious. Unfortunately he’s stopped updating it; I think that ‘working for a living’ thing interfered.
shouldn’t it be in Cafe Society? I saw Grudge Match, the book, at a Barnes and Nobles, in the mid-nineties, and I was a big fan of the site at the time.
Aw crap, MsWhatsit already named it. Well, several webcomics have compilation available in book form.
Thanks to you all! A bunch of great ones!
Also the Motley Fool Series…
Another example: The Baghdad Blog, apparently also printed with the title The Clandestine Diary of an Ordinary Iraqi. Based on this blog.
Oddtodd: Hard Times, Soft Couch, is a book length collection of original comics (as opposed to reprints of ones that appeared on the site) based on OddTodd’s Laid Off Land website.
Joel Spolsky’s Joel on Software blog essays were collected into a book by the same name. He has several other books on usability, but one of them is a collection of essays that originally appeared on his site. He has another new book, The Best Software Writing I, which is a collection of essays culled from other people’s blogs.
Jon Katz edited a book called “Voices from the Hellmouth” about the Columbine school shootings which included substantial commentary from the online forum Slashdot. I’m not sure this was ever really published, and I recall a copyright fight breaking out about the reuse of Slashdot posts, so this might be an interesting one to look at to see what can go wrong with such a project.
Unfortunately, this website hasn’t landed any book deals yet… YET!
The website isn’t updated, but there’s a mailing list on which he sporadically sends stories. The first book was awesome. Very much in the tone of the website. I didn’t like the second book nearly as much. It dealt with more serious topics, but still tried to fall back on the same style of humor, sometimes crashing and burning in the process. Also, he didn’t have the balls to resolve anything. But it’s still worth reading if you like Millington.
The Smoking Gun has at least one book out.
Coming Clean and Stoned, Naked & Dead. Both compilations from “anonymous confession” websites.
