That would be Bob Clampett of Bugs Bunny fame.
I would have loved to see this. If it had gone through it would have been the first animated feature film, preceding Disney’s ‘Snow White’ by a couple of years.

That would be Simon Hawke. The Ivanhoe Gambit is the first of a twelve book series called “Timewars” (sadly out of print now). Some very nice ideas and lots of fodder for a movie/s.
Found the thread that discusses the plans for the John Carter of Mars movie.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, anyone? Yes, I know it’s been in pre-greenlight hell for some time now.
Rainbow Six could be good, but hard to make into even a 3 hour movie.
HEAR!! HEAR!!
As a die hard King fan, I don’t get this either.
This one is right up there with “The Stand” regarding intriguing, endearing characters and just the “flavor” of the whole story.
It would be a good one, maybe even on a par with “The Shining”.
That’s a good thread…
Ah! Very Cool!!!
Yes, that was one I always thought should have been made into a movie.
For those who wonder who should play the Gunslinger? I don’t know his name, but that “sortof” Clint Eastwood lookalike that played Wolverine in the X-men would be a good candidate.
As someone else said about “Watership Down” with the computer generated graphics being what they are now. I’m surprised that the “Dragons of Pern” haven’t been thought of. (sorry, dangling prep).
I can’t be the only McAffrey fan can I??
Are you kidding? I picture Roland being 30 to 40 years younger than Mr. Eastwood is right now; Eastwood is almost 73 after all. Casting aside, I think it could be made into a great series of movies at some point, but only if the director is as dedicated to the project as someone like Peter Jackson is to LOTR. If it was made into a series of crappy mini-series the world would flood with tears.
I second Evil Captor’s call for Iain Banks’ Culture novels. Just about any one of them would be great if done right. (Peter Jackson! Peter Jackson!)
The Player of Games, Use of Weapons, and (I recently got done reading this one) Look to Windward come to mind. Excession would be a bit hard to pull off since it mostly takes place in the minds of the Minds… as it were.
Other books… let’s see. Pictures at 11 by Norman Spinrad.
Um… do graphic novels count? Like Sandman by Neil Gaiman. That could be really good.
I’d love to see a Sandman movie, but I have a horrible sinking feeling that it woudn’t be any good - that it would be simplified down to nothing.
I have heard that a Death movie is in the works. I think they’re doing High Cost of Living, with Faruzia Balk (crazy girl from The Craft) as Death.
Potentially it’s brilliant. I hope like hell it lives up to its potential
I’m really surprised that more Heinlein novels haven’t made it to the big screen.
For instance, think what Spielberg could do with, Have Space Suit - Will Travel. Young man tries to win a soap contest, and winds up travelling across the universe and saving the human race from an intergalactic tribunal. It’s got cute aliens (the Mother Thing), scary monster aliens (wormface), and even a trademark cute precocious kid. Cast Russell Crowe as Iago, and Frankie Munez in the starring role. Dad can be played by Christopher Walken, and you’ve got a blockbuster, I’m telling you.
Then there’s Double Star, which I guess has already been made as Dave… But it’d be a great movie.
How about Citizen of the Galaxy? You’d have to cut out some of the exposition about the free traders, but the story of a slave boy who goes on a voyage of discovery and finds out that he’s not what he seems has a timeless appeal.
And you know what I’d REALLY love to see? Heinlein’s Future History done as a science fiction miniseries, one episode per story. I would love to see Rhysling come to life, and Lazarus Long, and Johnnie from “The Long Watch”, and Dr. Pinero. You could run it like The Twilight Zone*, until all the stories are done.
Another one that could be a big hit is Starman Jones. Young man sneaks his way on a spaceship and finds romance, adventure, and his own character. I see this last one as having a sort of ‘Star Wars’ flavor, and I always wondered in Lucas didn’t base Luke Skywalker a bit on that. A young farm boy leaves home, and due to a certain incredible skill rises far up in stature and goes on an epic journey. Come to think of it, there’s a little Have Space Suit - Will Travel in that story as well.
I’ve seen it, and have it on videotape. It’s really very good – especially considering that most of the people associated hadn’t done animation before. They cut out a lot of material, but they had to, of course, or else they’d have a five-hour miniseries.
They tried. The project tanked due to creative differences: one person wanted to stay true to the novels, the other wanted to Xenify it so they could appeal to the drooling masses. Fortunately, the drooling masses didn’t win; unfortunately, neither did we. Blast.
Last I heard, Orson Scott Card was initmately involved in the Ender’s Game movie. He wrote the script himself, which combined elements of Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow. The beginning of the script was posted up on his site at one time, but I can’t seem to find it now.
I’m a bit worried about an ender movie, but with OSC at the helm, I don’t think it would turn out too badly. By the time it gets made, the current crop of child actors will be too old, but as long as they cast they younger version of Haley Joel Osment, and not the younger version of Jake Lloyd, it should work out.
I’m with Opal Cat on this one any/many of the Discworld books strike me as a great choice (now that LotR has likely upped the currency of Fantasy Films. I’d love to see the “Guards” books turned into cinema…great characters, twisting stories and oh so many memorable lines to steal (although I’d also want a narrator to give Pratchettian ‘footnotes’). Here’s to dreaming…
IIRC from aintitcoolnews.com he was having a pissing contest with one of the movie execs because they didn’t want the kids in the school to be an equal representation of the races on earth, but instead to have a token asian, black, indian, whatnot. If i knew how to navigate that site better i’d look for the article, i beleive i saw it before i read the book in September (that may have been the thing that finally pushed me into readin it).
Here’s the story:
Sounded to me like an argument that was fought and lost by Card, and that he might be bitter about it, but the project would proceed. That’s how I read it anyway…
Ditto on Flashman and Fafhrd & Grey Mouser. I could see Cary Elwes as Flashman, if he could manage to look the same age as he did in Princess Bride. For F&GM, maybe Kevin Nash and Christian Slater? Nah…have to be 2 unknowns.
I would like to see Donald Westlake’s Dortmunder books made into movies, and stay TRUE to the books, not become Martin Lawrence vehicles, like in What’s the Worst that could Happen?
Many of the books listed have been cited as “In Development” at one time or another.
But until they are actually filming, I think they can stay in our wish list.
I echo the sentiments of Ender, Chronicles (which could now be made adequately), Mote in God’s Eye, and the Alienist.
On the Alienist
Many years ago, I read that the knock on the Alienist as a screenplay was that the antagonist was a character that the reader doesn’t meet until the end. I think this is bunk. The movie se7en had the same type of “mysterious” villain and it was an excellent flick. Ralph Fiennes MUST play Kreizler!
