Bosses who don't listen

If only all bosses everywhere could be screened for this ability before being put into positions of power. Sigh.

I know what you need! A good dose of Dilbert.

This may cheer you up.

Back in the days when a computer was called a mainframe, cost £500,000, filled a room, neded extensive air-conditioning and was about as powerful as a modern graphic calculator, my boss asked me to tell him about security for a confidential database.

“You’ll want a password system. That means that everyone who logs on has to type a precise code, or they can’t see anything. If they type the wrong code three times, the system shuts down their terminal and alerts security.”

Having explained difficult words like ‘system’, log on’ and terminal’ (my boss didn’t have a computing background), he asked how long the database would remain secure.

“Well normally it would be very secure. It would take days to cycle through all the possible passwords, and alarm bells would be ringing throughout. But alas it could be broken in about 20 minutes!”

Boss looks horrified and asks how.

“Because they could bribe me for the password, since I’m underpaid…”
